79 300d Battery/starting issue

My 79 300D has been giving me a nest of trouble. When the engine is cold, the car starts hard. In addition, the battery will drain when the car is off, and the alternator (which I just replaced) will not charge the battery at all. Also, the radio has no power. (may be unrelated) All advise is appreciated.

get it running and check the voltage. should be 13+v. turn off all accessories and remove key, disconnect battery and place an amp meter between - terminal and - post to see if you have a draw. bad alternator can cause a draw, so can other things. disconnect alternator, fuses, etc, one at a time until draw goes away. the draw should be < .030 amps.

Question

Okay, today I went and tested it with a meter. I removed all the fuses one by one, disconnected the alternator, removed the glow plug relay and disconnected a couple of other things that I could get to, to no avail. When testing there was still a draw on the battery of +/- 33. Any ideas anyone? BTW, I DID discover that the radio has a blown fuse, so that solved one problem...

33 what? milliamps? 33 milliamps is close enough to 30, thats not the problem.
what is your charging voltage? how many milliamps did it draw before you disconnected everything?

Well, I'm not sure that the meter I was using was accurate. I got another one, but I'm really not sure how to use it. Am I looking for voltage, amperes, ohms or what? I guess I really don't understand how to use this thing, and when I tested the car on various settings I got no reading at all, but the battery did arc.

Okay you need a primer on using the meters or a friend who can explain them to you first in my opinion. Well worth the effort to do so. Can save you a fortune over the years.

Your concern is amps.

Amps are read in series.

Make sure you start on a high scale.

Battery+..... meter+....meter- ..... +battery lead.

The cheepie meters work quite well for checking this

if you don't know how to use a meter, you need to find someone who does before you fry something
