1986 Mercedes 300 SDL – pricing advice

'86 300 SDL Turbo Diesel. My dad passed away and I need to sell this car. It has about 131k miles. In good running condition except for a knocking sound. The interior and exterior as you can see isn't in the best shape. Clean title. My dad used this as a taxi. This is really all I know about the car. I'm in San Diego, but the car is in Phoenix. I only will be in town for 5 days to sell the car, so an attractive realistic price estimate is appreciated. Thanks much! Vicki

I might be brutal on this but:

The '86 SDL is pretty common, not worth a lot. Yours isn't a very desirable color, interior is rough plus the body damage, missing pieces, and theft damage to the center console, knocking could mean an engine.

If the knocking goes away, probably $600-$900. With the knock, $350. My opinion.

I have a 87 300sdl, and you might make more money off the car by parting it out. You could attempt to post it here in the parts section or use craigs list or ebay.

Good luck

I paid less than 2 grand for a very clean '86 SDL this year.

It seems as though your car may be more in the "for parts" realm of sale. Perhaps start asking 800$ and see what happens. The deal breaker is not know what is up with the motor. Having that answer would maybe get you a couple hundred more.

If you are in a hurry, get what you can and run.

Condolences for the loss of your father.

This car is far from an average representative 131 K example. The odometers are seldom accurate because of many reasons on that vintage and type anyways. Worth on this one is just going to be what an individual will pay unfortunatly. I would put it up for offers. One wheel already in the wreckers yard is not too extreme a reality.

Sorry and hope that your feelings are not offended. There is no intent to do that. On the otherhand sugar coated pie in the sky prices are nowhere in the realm of possibilities for this vehicle in my opinion. Any real value is in the remaining sellable or usable parts.

My father has long been absent now and I guess my survivors will have more than a few things to deal with as well when my turn comes. Still sorry for the loss of your father. It really can impact a person if the relationship was sound.

Try pulling different injector lines off.Could be injector time.If motor is fine, here in the South you'd get $2000.

Sorry to hear of your loss. If you have not been around this engine before you may be hearing something that is normal with these beast. If you could record a sound byte with your phone, etc and post so we could listen. It may be something less dreadfull then what most of us are thinking.

If you're willing to travel or have connections in the rust belt, a rust-free SDL will get quite a bit more up here. Ebay might be a really good option in this case as well

Thanks everyone for your condolences and insight. I do want realistic information, you are not hurting my feelings. The car is 350 miles away from me so I can not record the knocking sound.

Ebay sounds like a good option. What is the best way to list something like this when you are not sure what is wrong in the engine?

thanks again!

Without identification of the knock it will be difficult. Fortunatly for you a lot of ebay users seem to be compulsive gamblers when it comes to purchasing sight unseen.

If it sells fine and if not costs you little. I think you could state that a knock is present but you have no honest knowledge of what it is. Most ebay vendors would leave out that it saw service as a taxi cab as well. No sense pressing your luck too far.

Now if evidence all the taxi gear was installed still remains best include it in the description. To note the car has no rust is also very important.

Well Vicki worked with me and I now have the SDL. I think the knock is from nailing but not sure. I fired it up and it isnt a rod or a main so thats all I cared about. Drove it on my trailer and got the heck out of Phoenix. It was 110 degrees F or so. Tucson is much cooler at 107 or so. My wife is going to be soooo happy with me. Our aniversary is Saturday so I got her present for her early.

Vicki was great to work with and has a couple of early 90's diesel Ford trucks for sale at a very good price one is 4x4 the other is 2x4.

Back to the SDL, I talked with the mechanic where the car was at and he said they ran Biodiesel thru it and plugged everything up from all the gunk that came loose. He pulled the tank and filters to get it going. Could that be part of the injector problem? Damn, I have only been in to MB's since last May and I already have two. Oh the mileage was off as suspected by many. Thanks

Sure, no problem asking but I don't kiss and tell. I was happy and she was happy. If she wants to post up what she got for it thats her decision. It was in the ranges of all the numbers thrown around in the thread. I hope to make it reliable and if I like it more than my 300D I'll sell the 300D. If I don't like it as well I'll sell it. Most likely 6 months or so to get up to speed. Thanks
