injector tigheting question

So i removed my injectors today and will replace the nozzles tomorrow. It took a lot of power to take them out of the engine. I also bought a torque wrench to put the injectors together properly. When i put them back in tomorrow how hard should i tighten them.

you have removed the heat shields and replaced them with new after cleaning out all the carbon from the PC seat right?

Is this for the 96 E300 or the 81 240D?

If you are replacing the Spray Nozzles inside of the Injectors you will also need to know the torque of the Injector Nuts.

I recently bought a 1985 300D. I just replaced the injector nozzles as per instructions includes and tightened the actual injector 55 foot pounds. Now I want to install them in the engine and not sure if there is a tightening spec for that as well, since I have torque wrench now.

So I installed the injectors, and now I got nailing. I tightened all the injectors to spec as described in the instruction. None of the injectors are leaking, but there is some nailing going on and it actually is a little rougher then it was before.

Did you use a pressure tester to set injector release pressures? Did something sound strange when you put the injectors back together? I know of someone who was doing this and his nozzle had cracked in 2 inside the injector... knock on wood. Are you sure everything got tightened to spec in every injector? Where did you get the specs from?

If you didn't balance the injectors, you should not be surprised. That said, even well adjusted injectors with new nozzles can nail when initially placed in service. I have found that a dose of Marvel Mystery Oil can quiet things down.

Did you remove the preservative oil from the new nozzles?

I did not remove the preservation oil. I installed monark nozzles and they came with instructions that I used. I did not balance them, since I have no tester.

There's some available out there. Google "Mercedes Diesel Fuel Injector Balance Pressure Tester". They're not cheap, about $180, but I guess it's cheaper than have a local shop do them.

I found a place that will balance them for 20 bucks each. Its a local shop that rebuilds diesel injectors. Now, could it be that since I did not remove the preservative oil from the nozzles that it could have something to do with that.

One of the Reasons to clean the Nozzles before you use them preservation Oil or not is that I have see tiny metal chips or other stuff inside of them. (Also each of the 2 parts of the Spray Nozzle are fited together as a matched set; never mix them up with other Spray Nozzles.)
Other thinigs that can cause issues are if dirt/rust gets inside of the Injectors when they are apart.

I believe companies that say you can only swap their Spray Nozzles without doing the other work on the Injectors are more concerned about selling than about the customer.
While some of their Customers are able to get away with it others do not.

When Injectors are taken apart; even if you reuse the Old Spray Nozzles the precision flat surfaces inside of the Injectors should be lapped flat.

Everthing needs to be exceptionally clean when the Injectors are assembled. Even lint from a Rag inside of the Spray Nozzle can cause it to fail.

Setting the Pop/Opening Pressure has be spoken enough of that the "why do it" ought to be well known.

There is a part inside of the Injector that if it is installed backwards it often results in breaking off the inside end of the Pintel when the Injector Nut is torqued down; I know because I have done it.
(As a back up to prevent this from happening screw the Injector Nut on by hand; if the nut does not screw on as far as it did before; do not Torque it; check inside to see if it was assembled correctly.)

I lapped some parts inside, because the instructions said that if not lapped the chances are that it would leak. I lapped them clean and smooth on a straight surface( used a glass table). I cleaned everything and made sure there is no dirt inside the injectors. I might have missed something, but i was sure when i fired her up she would run smooth.

So, i fixed the nailing. I took the injectors apart again. Turns out that i forgot to install the washer on the top side of the spring on one injector, and also one of those pins broke on the nozzle valve. So i cleaned one of the old Bosch nozzles and put it back in and its idling very smooth now, and no more nailing. i will try to get the broken nozzle replaced, just so that all the nozzles are the same
