'91 350sdl rod bolts
While oil pan is off for repair, I have removed one connecting rod cap.
Expected to find stretch bolts, as shown in the manual. Instead, found what looks like regular bolts. Not sure if these can be reused, and how far to tighten. Any advice? |

I think all 12-point are stretch and hex head are not.
There should be a measurement specification in the FSM you can use to determine if stretch bolts can be reused.

If stretch type in that particular location I would seriously consider replacing them unless the factory shop manual specifies otherwise. That is just my opinion though.
A lot of my thinking always goes along the lines that there is never enough time to do things right yet time can be found to undo disasters that can occur as a result. That also take ten times longer to accomplish. In your case I might drop metric motors a line asking if they always replace them or not. Or wait for anyone with a shop manual for that engine to see what mercedes specifies. |

Thanks for all posted comments.
Johnt49, the bolts I've found look different, the thread is almost full length, and the 7.1mm dia. section is not there... |

The bolts have been superseded three times due to failure issues. The correct part number is: Screw, x12 MB# 111 038 00 71 Using any other fastener is begging for failure. |

The front bearing shell in your pic doesnt look too flash either. Unless its a photo problem, I would be replacing the shells & bolts.

Torque?
I'm in process of installing rod bearings and bolts.
Have new 111-038-0071 rod bolts, which are straight shank, as shown on the top of this thread photo. Is the tightening torque 30Nm + 90degrees, same as for the neck shank bolts?. |

stretch bolts
40Nm + 90 degrees are the correct values for this part number.

Be sure to R&R the piston oil squirters from the block, use thread-lock when re-installing, I had one come loose on my '91 SDL and go through the crusher.
