Not sure what my 83 240d auto gets for MPG, guess I'll have to get around to fixing the odometer and report back......
BTW, this thread would more interesting if folks mentioned whether they have an auto or a manual trans.

in my 1985 300D I get between 27-30 on the highway and 25-27 around town. I have 255k miles on the engine. I noticed the fuel economy went up after I put in new motor mounts. Not sure why. The old mounts were original and pretty much gone.

23MPG 85 300TD
My wagon gets a very consistant 22-23. I drive briskley at all times. 80%in town 20% on the highway. I have never tried to adjust my driving style to get mileage. Alda is tweaked. Crossbars are installed. I have MXV4 LRR tiresthat I just LOVE. The tires didn't change the mileage. I had Toyo Proxes before. Some commented on a decrease in fuel economy after a change of tires. No change for me. Seems no matter how I drive, my mileage stays the same. My wife can pull off 26MPG in her 84 300SD, with the best of 28MPG on a trip.

Finally drove almost 400 100% highway miles, average of ~70 mph. Got 33.1 mpg. I was hoping to get 35 mpg. Maybe with summer blend it will do it.

My OM603 1987 300 SDL gets 25mpg in town driving as fast as conditions allow. I get 29 freeway with cruise set at 75.

My 1987 300D does well (I think).
Worst 26mpg Best 32mpg Average 30-31mpg Running posted speed limits instead of 10 or so over increased my average mpg from 27.5 to the 30-31 I get now. This sure beats 15 in my 2006 Silverado Ext Cab Long Bed 4X4! |

Don't let anyone over sell it......
I was told multi times that a 1985 w123 300d could get 30mpg. That was a bunch of hog wash! In both my 300d's I got 24mpg and less driving fast. Some people claim they get better but i only have my experiance to tell. I suspect that if someone is getting better they don't run the AC and have speedo error. My numbers were double checked with my GPS for accurate miles traveled divided by gallons used to fill up. I have been told that the next generation chasis w124 got better mileage. Less drag due to newer style i'm guessing.
On the bright side, I can tell you that my 1982 240d with a 4-speed got 31mpg last tank. Not sure if that was a fluke but I'll know more in a couple months of fuel fill ups. If i want MPG I drive my 01 Beetle TDI and hypermile it. 58mpg last time i tried to get good mpg with the AC off and 48mpg the rest of the time.

MPG
Without the AC, I get 26 -28 MPG on the highway. I lose 2 mpg from the AC use, consistently. I drive like an old lady, although I have been known to hotdog it, especially on the freeway.

However, like Zulfiqar says below, 30 MPG with the N/A 24 valve I6 ('95 E300) is very common. When I bought mine, the girl told me it would get 30, and I did not believe her. My first tank I drove 600 miles exactly, and put in exactly 20 gallons. Made a believer out of me. My '98 E300 is a different story. I am lucky to get 29ish on the highway, and barely get 27 with city driving. I guess the trade off for this car is the power. The E300 TURBODIESEL really scoots!

My 83 240d running an 83 euro 300d motor, a 307 diff and the five speed with 17-18% OD gets 35 with regularity highway running 75. I believe on a trip if I ran 55 it would top 40.
With the 307 and the regluar four speed it got 30 highway. Around town it gets a bit over 20. It is sweet driving too. I have a little torque in reserve with the current setup and I believe I could pull the same setup with a 288 diff for another couple of mpg.

1987 300sdl. 326k miles. I've owned 16 years and consistently had 27-28 mpg combined; including 25 mile commute anywhere from 0 to 80 mph- stop and go. have hit 32 mpg on trip once or twice. Not slow car!!

I agree with Mhin. My 86 SDL did 30mpg pretty often. Not bad for a yacht of a car!

OK . . . back to OP's question:
I owned: '84 190D, 5-spd, 2.2L engine - 37 mpg, religiously, would have gotten 39 - 40, but had wide tires, low profile (sniff, sniff . . . my beloved Gretta got bent frame from 15-yr old driving suburban after 6-yrs trouble-free driving - just had done valve job, new clutch when crashed) '76 240D, 4-spd, 2.4L engine, 33 mpg in high altitude, peppy like gasser, Pierre bought and says gets 36 MPG around Miami '83 300D, 26 -28 mpg w/o air . . . lose about 2 mpg when A/C working - hmmmm, gonna have to look at the 3:07 more carefully . . . I hate my mileage to the point considering trading for a 4-spd 240D in equal condition. The 300D has about 200K on it (odometer quit working about 3K miles ago).
