manual 5 spd fluid

What fluid does the 5 speed from a 1986 190D? I want to put in fresh fluid

I just purchased the trans, drives shafts , peddle assembly, flywheel and cross member to convert my 1989 to manual.

dropnosky is correct, ATF it is. Good luck with the swap, it will be a different car.

10/30 can cause difficult shifts on worn transmissions. redline synthetic atf seems to give the best performance. other thin oils should be fine. maybe some 0/20? mobil1 synthetic?

I don't think their 70s manual transmissions called for 10W30 because I have a factory service manual page dated January 1979 that calls for Type A ATF for their manual transmissions. I don't think they started using 10W30 until the 1980s because my other service manual page from February 1991 says "Refer to MBNA Approved Service Products List", which suggests by then, different types of fluids were specified.

there are internal differences in the two gearboxes that would lend his 86 more toward a thinner viscosity fluid like ATF over your 80 even though they both call for it, which is why its probably specified by MB.
His probably has the same fluid impeller between the input and output shafts as below, which is going to work better and faster with thinner ATF over motor or gear oil.

I agree with you though, 10W-30 and even 90wt seem to work just fine in most of these gearboxes for what its worth.

90wt works ok in the 4-speed, probably would not use it in his 86, but its better than nothing if he needs to test the car or move it. Little sluggish to shift in winter though. Used it a couple times when I was towing with the car.

I've been curious about this myself. I have a 1968 200D with manual transmission and the operator's manual calls for ATF. I was told to use Dexron III, but then corrected by someone else saying that ATF might leak and to use gear oil instead. Confusing...

Naa, ATF would be fine. Sure, a thinner fluid might leak out seals that are 40+ years old while gear oil might not. I say use ATF as specified, and if it leaks, replace the seal or seals.

Nothing magic or dangerous seal wise about the ATF. Most of these old trannys have nothing more complicated than paper gaskets, rubber O-rings, and a couple shaft seals. They are replacement items that a lot of times never get done cause its a PITA.

Here is a quote from a member on the heckflosse group:

"The fluid type to be used in a manual transmission is dictated by the type of bearings in the transmission. Transmissions that use lots of needle bearings must have ATF oil (and are designed for it), where as transmissions that use mostly ball bearings use 90W. Using 90W in a trans designed for ATF guarantees that most of the bearings will be running dry and will fail prematurely, as well as be noisier than they should be."

ATF in general, RP Synchromax, or Redline MTL. My favorite it Redline MTL...

I called Royal Purple tech and they said use Synchromax. I've been using Synchromax in my trucks NV5600 transmission for over 125,000 miles on 50,000 change intervals. It did not like Redline MTL or Amsoil"s. Truck is about to cross the 200,000 soon.
