ironically, Driver's window won't go up

I just picked up my 1986 190d from my shop this afternoon. $1000 on the visa got me 4 new injection pump seals, a replumbed fuel system, a new wheel bearing, a new e-brake cable and a new engine mount--all good stuff--until I park the car after leaving the shop and the driver's side window won't roll up....

I hear the motor working when I hit the down button, but nothing when I hit the up button. It's probably jammed, right? Where do I start?

what an irony, indead.

I bought my 190D with a working window for much less than $1000. It is a bit steep for the work done.

It is not the fuse for sure. May be the switch. If it does go down but not up then it is probably the switch. Try swapping in another switch. If it does not help then open up the door panel and put direct 12v to the motor. It will go up/down depending on the polarity of the battery. It motor runs and nothing happens then the mechanism is probably jammed.

Sorry, but I fail to see the irony.

Your switch works one way but not the other ie no motor noise going up pretty well should let you know the switch is working 1/2 way anyway.

The other half maybe be a connection that dropped off or the years of use has caused the switch to fail. Many can be repaired by pulling them and repairing them.

Replacement switches can be found used on ebay for a wide range of prices.

pop out the switch and clean it out. odds are good that it just needs to be taken apart and cleaned out.
it's also possible that all the work in the door hinge area they damaged a wire from the console to the up position... but I'm betting on a dirty switch.

Spending $1000 in a repair shop and driving yet another problem home. For that kind of money you'd expect perfection. (The shop wasn't supposed to fix it. Just saying you still wish the car worked after a major expenditure, related or not)

On the front doors, the same wires do "up" and "down." It's all a matter of polarity.

Not irony. Coincidence? maybe. Frustrating? definitely.

Now that his Car knows he is willing to spend $1000 on it; the Car has become spoiled and wants more attention!

Installed new motor--window works great, but I broke the little white car that rides on the track, keeping the window in alignment front to back as it goes up and down. Of course, there is no part number. Anybody know what I'm talking about or where to get one?

Check the 'Buy Parts' tab above. I bought a 'Window Regulator Kit' (I have a different model than you though) from Fastlane about $10 IIRC a couple years ago.
