Why are the speedo's on these older Mercedes so far off?

So, I keep reading about how far off people's Mercedes speedometers are on the older models. Mines is TERRIBLY off! @75 MPH it's reading 65.

So, what goes wrong that causes them to be so far off? What's the fix to get it reading right?

The speedometer in my W115 is off by 1-2 MPH. The one in my 280CE is dead accurate. Wonder what causes them to read incorrect speeds.

Are you sure you have the correct speedometer, or rear axle in your car? You should have a 2.88:1 rear axle. Usually they're aren't off by 10 MPH...

Mine is off by about 5mph pacing with the 2006 A4. So I'm not sure what the actual number is. But if I am going "65" I seem to be passing most people.

Based on what I'm finding (617.952--not .951 engine and tranny that doesn't match what went in an 85 300SD), I wouldn't be surprised if the rear end was different too.

Any tips on finding out which rear end is in mine? (ie. where to look?)

The differential is stamped. On the bottom left corner you'll see a small flat spot, clean that off very good and you'll see the ratio.

My 300SD is spot on all the way through 80, my 300e is off but the instrument panel was either tampered with or replaced at some point...car has salvage history and the odometer is messed up too.

My 300E's original speedometer is dead on accurate..... ~.5mph off at most. My spare cluster on the other hand is 6-8mph off. I wonder if you can re-index the speedometer needle like the other gauges when disassembled?

Well, the '85 wagon was until I changed the tire size from stock. Wasn't the car's fault......

So you really are traveling at 15, 30, 20, 40, 35 MPH?

Well, you have to figure that at some point in the bouncing it will cross the actual speed, so it's momentarily accurate

Yep, that's what I meant.

My bouncing isn't too severe, only a range of 3mph max...more twitchy than bouncy, really. And, it only happens at high speeds, and then, only sometimes...
