Violent shut down

This is on a 1985 300SD. When the car first starts is shakes the entire front end unless you throttle up, after it warns up or when the hydrogen builds up it smooths down. Then when you shut off the car it has this violent shake. I was thinking of the motor mount, which is my next question. Anyone have a good link for engine mount replacement?

Also, I saw a small shock close to each mount. Will someone educate me of their function?

I do not know where to point you, except to use the search feature..
but it really does sound like you are looking in the proper direction.
The shock (and good engine mounts ) is to keep your engine from doing what you are complaining about it doing ...

koya,

The engine mounts keep vibration to the frame down during operation.

The engine shocks + shock mounts keep the engine from violently shaking on shutdown.

If the engine does not shut off nearly instantly, then your vacuum shutoff valve or vacuum system needs attention.

The top of the engine shocks are usually what give out (thats what has happened to me). Have a buddy shut the car off and listen for the rattling part(s), and you'll probably see a busted shock mount. Passenger side mount is suspect - it usually gets oil dripped on it and is generally in the vicinity of higher heat.

Thank you. I guess the next items on my list will be the engine mounts and those shocks. I gave up my vintage BMW's because they were too small, I elected to do this project because the MB's body style on the newer models are similarlly like eveyone other car out there. At least this particular year still has the MB distictive appearance of laxury/engineering.

Thank you again for everyone's help.
