Lost my key...help?

So I just purchased a 1982 240d but somehow managed to lose my one and only key for it Does anyone know if a locksmith can come out and make a new key for it? Or do I have to go purchase a new ignition lock cylinder? Any help/advice would be much appreciated

Replacing the lock cylinder without the key is a major hassle. The best answer is to go to the dealer with the VIN and proof of ownership and see if you can buy a replacement key.

Yes. I just bought the tumbler and 2 keys from the dealer for my 80 240D.
Order 2 keys, they are only about $15 ea or so. have your Drivers Lic. Registration to show the parts guy proof of ownership. the keys are ordered from your Vin #. they are made in Texas and can have them the next day, usually.

Just to be clear, the title needs to be in your name. Having a drivers license with a matching address sure helps too.

Go to the dealer and order both keys. The master and the valet (or just the master). All I had to show them was my registration and Drivers License. It is good idea in case you lose one or the other.

all that said, is true, but FYI, any locksmith can make a replacement key from your door or glovebox tumbler. cost is around 100.00
