During Diesel Purge, 300TD runs out of fuel? Twice!

1987 with 190k, strong running car that has treated me well over the last 3 years, wanted to do something nice to it and do a Lubro Moly Diesel Purge then change the filters. Disconnected the tubes off the two lines that go to the tank, stuck them into the container filled with Lubro, started the car... 5 mins later the car died.. no smoke, nothing just died.. looked at the fuel filter (spin on) ... empty...
got the car running again with lots of cranking, did it again, ran out of fuel again.
the line to the lifter is sucking it up, and the return line is spitting it out again, 10 minutes of different revs and the car dies, container is just as full as it was before, filter is empty.
Yes I'm using the correct lines, i put a clear tube on pick up (going to the plastic filter) and i can see it sucking up...

thoughts?

are you saying the car runs dry with fuel still in the bottle? perhaps you are getting too much fuel flow, and it's creating a vortex in the bottle allowing air into the lines... or your lines could be full of holes...

Was there air bubbles coming out of the return line when the motor was running?
The only way that you could have the secondary fill with air is for there to be an air leak. Are the hose clamps on the lines tight?
How can you see it "sucking it up"?

When I reved the engine more fuel spat out of the return line.
I was able to see it being sucked in through the clear line that I attached inplace of the clear filter with a plastic connector. With the engine running, I was surprised the fluid level wasnt dropping so i pulled the tube out a bit and saw as it sucked up bubbles.. I did that a few times.

Sorry the car is my DD, already have it back together with new filters... so no pics.

I followed this tutorial for the 603 http://www.dieselgiant.com/injectorcleaning.htm

the spin on filter housing has 3 banjo bolts, 1 has an arrow going in with a line from the lifter pump, the 2nd has an arrow going out with a clear line supplying the IP, the 3rd has the small line that hops the 6 injectors, a clear line from the IP back side, and the return line that goes back to the metal line mouted on the frame that goes to the fuel tank. Return line.

The lifter line is the one with the plastic fuel filter between the engine mounted thermostat(?) and the metal line mounted below the return line...i.e. the only other line going from the fuel tank...

to diesel purge a 60x motor (you have a 603)

on the drivers side of the engine bay, down some what low you will see two fuel lines that came from the fuel tank.

the SUPPLY line goes to your little plastic prefilter. you will undo this line, and plug it with an old bolt. and attach your bottle of diesel purge to the prefilter.

the other fuel line, that is down low is your return. undo this line and make it return to your diesel purge can.

to run diesel purge in these cars you have to pass it thru both fuel filters. which is why its recommended to run two cans.

also, don't get confused between your power steering hoses and your fuel hoses. they look the same, but go very different places.

thanks for the response, thats exactly what I did... twice, same results.
Yes, they are the fuel lines not PS... I understand you are trying to cover all the bases and I appreciate that, but what would cause this.. the car runs fine (put 200 miles on since this incident and it runs fine..)
I've been wrenching on cars for a long time, I have an automotive background, years at Ford, Rover and ran an independent shop for 7 years... but I jsut dont understand this..
