I have used various brands over the years and have used them in a wide variety of vehicles from my quad to my 911 and on my brother in-laws F-350
Turbo Diesel. Here is what I found on the gas engines.
BG products do work, however I have a new love. Sea Foam ! it can be used in all the applications I need and "the proof is in the pudding". I did a direct purge at the manifold on my 03 suburban and allowed it to suck about 1/2-3/4 of a cup into the manifold and then shut it down and let it sit for about an hour.
I then repeated it and brought the Rpms up above idle to about 1500 rpms.
I then tanked up all the way and took a 30 minute highway drive. Prior to this procedure I had some rough idle issues. Non since then and that was last summer. I now have almost 140,000 miles on it and yes it goes offroad and tows
alot. I have found seafoam on sale for less than $20.00 per gallon and always keep some on hand.

The seafoam is known for its ability to clean induction system and possibly valves. However, for the 911, I've found that the only thing that cleans up CIS injectors is RedLine Complete Fuel System Conditioner. Further, it is detergent-based, and can be used without changing the oil after. Many of the solvent-based products (Chevron Techron et al) warn that you should change the oil after use as it can damage internal parts such as bearings.

I love these discussions. Some peopl expect the world from a little can and complain that nothing is fixed and the old car is an old car.

I had a 87 hyundai pony that was notorious for clogged carburator idle passage. After a few removal and disassembly and new fuel filters later it still had problems, but a shot of stp fuel injector cleaner kept it in check.

Had an old pos 750 Suzuki 4bager bike. got it non running. cleaned the carbs out fixed it up went on a tour. ran alright to me. I had the tank full of fuel injector cleaner to keep the old crud from doing more harm. Half an hour later one of the cylinders started running, i didnt realise it wasn working untill then.

Ever since then I use the stuff about twice a year.

My favorite is water in the intake. steam cleans everything out nice and clean.

Had a 92 range rover classic that failed an emission test. Ran 2 gallons of water through the engine, left a giant black puddle behind the truck, but then passed with flying colors.

Water should work for a diesel, cleans the rings, steam cleans the combustion chamber, maybe even takes the stuff off the nozzle tip for a better spray patter, but i didnt have a chance to try it yet. I once turned the garden hose on lo and did a safary van, kept spraying till it bogged then backed off. I miss that van.

I do agree, most stuff is crap though.

ATF works just as good as seafoam in the intake or oil, it's all detergents.

Actualy look at some of the other threads in regards to ATF and it's use in the combustion chamber. Anyway I do agree on the water idea. I have used water combined with various intake cleaners ( 1 at a time ) and used a bottle with a Schraeder valve on it ( I bought it and it was designed to be pressurized) and sprayed this mix into the carb throat on mowers, tractors and my caddy to clean
and remove varnish. Just keep the RPM's up and back off the mixture if the motor stumbles.

jinxed myself. trying to get my 98 passat ready for another emission test, failed the first for high nox. I figured water always works, so in the engine it went, right from the hose on low flow fan setting. 15 minutes of doing it and car sounds great. reset computer and I thought better check the oil since the car is unknown to me but it was full last week. one inch too high on the dipstick, all milky white. I guess I have a bit of blowby or I sprayed right into a PCV hose. oops. Going to get another oil change and then a retest

X2 Winmutt !!
Probably would get the same result if you p##d in the tank!!
I get the best results with a good Italian type tune. Find a good 20 mile up hill stretch and make it work!! Short runs & around town stuff over winter does a diesel no good.

I'm walking on pins and needles here since I have to say something negative. I apologize ahead of time if I offend or insult anyone.

In MY OPINION, BG products are MUCH MORE about their marketing methods than about their products. If you go to the popular oil site and read some of the product analysis results you will see that BG's products for the most part have very little active ingredient.

In the cans that are delivered to the commercial shops, there are tokens inside the cans. When the tech pours in or otherwise uses the ingredient in the can, they take out and keep the token. They cash in the tokens with the BG guy. This encourages them to sell this stuff.

IMHO BG accomplishes their goal in selling these products with that goal being their customers giving money to BG.

My $0.02,

True as far as the tokens go. However this practice has been around from many companies supplying professional shops ( I was an auto MX- Chevy, VW, Audi, BMW Porsche then FAA certified aircraft MX) for a long time. Anyway regardless of data or seat of the pants feel keep your filters clean buy fuel from a reputable source and get some highway miles in.

Just a general comment on the Diesel Purge.

If on your Older Diesel you have the Stock Bosch Nozzles and the drilled passages in #14 and #15 are solidly plugged with Carbon a Diesel Purge may not help because the Chemical would just go around the obstructions.

If #14 and #15 passages are open a periodic Diesel Purge may keep them open and keep a problem from happening.

The newer Mercedes Diesel Injector Nozzles (Bosch) use a different system where part of the Pintel is cut a way as in pic #2. The Monark Nozzles for the Older Diesels also have the cut away area instead of the drillings.
Bosio Injector Nozzles have neither.
