'82 240d - Can you recommend me some fluids

I wonder what you like for:

1.) Gear oil
- Manual Trans, Rear diff
2.) Power steering fluid
3.) Good ol' motor oil

I heard good things about Royal Purple full synthetic gear oil, but it's pricy and I've heard horror stories about how it destroys 'yellow metal' in some transmissions. As for power steering and motor oil, I have some ideas but would LOVE to know what's tried and true 'round here!

Thanks!

Some forum members regard this question as a religious issue, and I would agree.

I use:
Chevron Delo 400 15W-40 Motor Oil
Edit: Correction: Used Dexron/Mercon III ATF for the 4-speed.
Haven't touched the Rear Diff yet.
Haven't touched the P/S Fluid.

AMSOIL

I am an amsoil fan and use it exclusively in my vehicles. Thats only a preference. However for manual transmissions, you need to find out your transmission requirements. A transmission that requires GL-4 should only receive GL-4 and not a general GL-4,5 oil. It will destroy the yellow metals regardless of what the manufacturer states for it having a general compatibility. From experience, I destroyed my transmission in my nissan by using a "GL-4,5" compatible oil from royal purple. I now only use Amsoil GL-4 transmission oil and have had no problems. But there are other suitable GL-4 oils out there, its just a preference.

If you're going to stick with dino oil, then Delo 400 or Shell Rotella are highly rated. Unfortunately all of our favorites that used to be high in zinc are now CJ4 rated and so not nearly so stellar.

ATF for the trans, but I put Amsoil MTF in mine, as well as marine diesel 15-40 for motor oil. But then I only use Amsoil products for all 9 of my vehiculars - 3 cars, a truck, an RV, and 4 motorcyles.

PS is also ATF. At least change the filter and the fluid.

Best bet is to at least put something new in everything as a minimum. The rest is gravy. Don't forget to flush the brakes and clutch hydraulics - Dot4.

Browse www.bobistheoilguy.com for more info on lubricants, a more 'scientific' approach.

A word of warning about using ATF in 1980's power steering systems - although ATF is specified in the owner's manual some say that ATF (the fluid) has changed quite a lot since then.

See for example

You'll have to read through the whole thread to get the picture...

I use Mo1 all around and ATE super blue or 2000 brake fluid (same product, just diff colors). The reality is if you use any premium synthetic fluids and change regularly you'll be good to go.

My 240 is an auto but in other vehicles I stick with dino in the gearbox and change religiously. Mo1 in the diffs. I've tried both Mo1 and RP in the gearboxes and found shifting / syncros to not be quite right until the gearbox warmed up so that's why I stick with dino.

I am using Royal Purple Synchromesh in my tranny. I haven't tackled the rear diff yet. I also use Royal Purple in the power steering pump. I used Napa 15w-40 diesel oil, but I switched to Rotella for this oil change. I have run Rotella in a Jeep 4.0L before. I think it is good oil. I am using Valvoline Synthetic brake fluid. The ATE and other recomended are very good. I might try or switch to Castrol for brake fluid.
I won't say I am a Royal Purple fan. I haven't had any problems yet. I have used some Amsoil products and do trust them. I'd say it is more that some of the local stores carry Royal Purple on the shelf. I use Pennsoil Platinum in another car. I have also used Valvoline synthetic Power steering fluid in some cars too.
I'd probably use a dino oil first, Rotella or Delo are good choices. See what type of leaks you have. If any, I would not use synthetics. It will leak worst. Mine does leak and probably consumes oil too. So, I am sticking to conventional (dino) oil for now. I do change at 3K. I just finished a cleansing with AutoRX. So, I'll see how the Rotella does. My oil get fairly dirty at that milage. Soot load in deisels is a concern. Still, I did not get the oil anylized, so nothing but an opinion.

Chevron Delo, Shell Rotella, and Mobil Delvac are the recommended brands of motor oil and can usually be had pretty cheaply at wal-mart. Rotell and Delo offer their own synthetic, and Mobil 1 Turbodiesel truck is obviously mobil's synthetic. I buy whichever happens to be the cheapest when I'm at the store. I'm a firm believer in hot 'n often.

I can tell you to use power steering fluid (can't recommend a brand) over the ATF that the owners manual calls for.

I put in cheap ATF in the trans and cheap hypoid gear oil in the diff. Wanna change that eventually, but I think the engine matters the most because motor oils are the most complex lubricants.

For those folks in O'Reilly territory, Mobil Delvac is on sale this month. $7.99 per gallon, thru July 27th.

Simple response:

Diesel oil like the truckers use such as; Delo, Rotella or Delvac for the engine
Power Steering Fluid from the auto store for the power steering
10W30 Premium motor oil for the manual transmission
Common 85W90 for the rear axle.

Redline MTL in the transmission.

Redline 75w90 gear oil took the whining sound out of my diff.

I wanted to switch from Delo to Mobil 1 synthetic in the engine this week, but I couldn't pass up the $7.99 jugs of Delvac at O'Rielly's.

Mobil 1

I use Mobil 1 products wherever I can - oil (Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40), automatic transmission (Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF) and differential (Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lubricant 75W-90). You pay more but I think the consensus is that Mobil 1 is a great product.

I have never seen Mobil 1 power steering fluid. I just used some recognizable name brand (I forget which) PS fluid from the auto parts store for that. I purchased two store-brand bottles and one name brand, flushed with the store brand (you'll find instructions on here for a PS flush) and then filled with the name brand (after replacing the PS filter, of course).
