Door Check Strap Lube - 83 300SD Turbo
Is there any way of properly lubricating these stupid straps without removing the door panel. My hinges are all well lubricated. Its those pesky straps that are driving me nuts.
Reading some other posts, it's only a matter of time until one of these things jams on me and I don't want to have to cut it off with a dremel or sawzall. Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

Mine failed in the open position meaning that it simply stopped checking the door.
The check strap has a plastic cover on it to keep out the elements. If your plastic cover has come off and you can get some grease on the marble ball bearings then you should see some relief. Taking off the door panel is annoying, but I've had to do it so many times I can get it off in about a minute. Those straps aren't expensive, I am very pleased with the replacement. Its an easy diy.

When the door check straps START GIVING YOU TROUBLE, REPLACE THEM.
You can Micky Mouse around trying to lube them to get more life out of them. when you get tird of beating your head on the wall, you will come around . I have been there trying to lube them. when they start getting stiff, groan, squeek, crack etc... it just puts extra stress on the door pin where they attach. eventually causing the spot welds to break. Most likely they are the originals, replace them and you are good to go another 20yrs. I have picked up a couple new ones at the JY a time or two. they really aren`t all that hard to replace. Charlie

Yes, I agree with Charlie. Replace it before you have a problem. The worst would be that you are out somewhere and cannot get the door closed. Then you will be tempted to force it and will break the hinge or damage the pillar. The second worst will be that you cannot open the door.
I tried to disassemble my door check and refurbish it, but that was a waste of time. You cannot get it back together without a special jig. I launched the ball across the garage and almost broke a window. That was enough for me. The replacement is not very expensive. Good luck. Richard
