clogged fuel strainer

heres a pic of my clogged fuel strainer from my 80 300d sedan...nasty

I am utterly surprised that the car even ran with it in this condition. I was getting tired of changing primary filters every 2-3 days. The trick of swapping return and delivery lines in the engine bay would help in pinch but I needed to pull it and mark this off of my to do list.

I had a tank out of an 83 240d so I just pulled the strainer from that spare tank and got it ready for the 300d. The 300d had a push on hose barb fitting screwed into the strainer so it may have been service in the past or they just placed in the fitting to facilitate a fuel line replacement.

So I pulled off the line and a good dribble stream came out but I knew there was about 5 gallons in there and it would have taken a few hours to drain. I borrowed a 43 or 45 mm (not sure what size it was) socket from a friend and pulled the strainer. Boy, what a gusher of fuel that spewed out. I had a 55 gal plastic drum cut in half lengthwise for a collection vessel....works great.

You have a "bug" problem. Time to treat your fuel to kill it off. I hear seafoam does a good job. There are plenty of threads about this sort of problem. Changing your fuel supplier will be a good idea as well.
