Expansion valve

Where is the expansion valve located?

A number of W123s run R-134a with acceptable cooling. I don't think a lot of folks replace the expansion valve. Maybe yours has some debris or corrosion and just needs to be replaced.

on the subject of "Klima", what are the differences? I just parted an '88 190E with a 2.3 gasser. The Klima says it is for a 4 Zylinder. Mine is a 5 Zylinder. Would it work even just for testing purposes?

Also, what is the Klima Kickdown?

Mine has one of those, too. Since so many of the other relays do multiple things, I figure that one controls AC and downshifting when the kickdown switch is engaged. Makes sense, since the compressor is disengaged with the kickdown switch.

IIRC, gasser Klimas are keyed to the number of cylinders because they receive a pulse per coil firing. Diesel Klimas get a more direct pulse per flywheel revolution. On early Klimas, there's also a difference in the compressor engagement delay depending on year model and engine. Early Klimas have a 10 second delay, late gasser Klimas have a 4 second delay, late Diesel Klimas have no delay.

As for kickdown, the Klima relay powers the kickdown switch. No Klima relay, such as in my Klima-less workaround, no kickdown switch function.

Klima relays tend to be model-specific and engine-specific. It might be possible to disassemble and reverse-engineer a relay to work on a different car but it would not be worth the time and effort.

As to the kickdown application, in some models Klima watches the RPMs and, when they get close to the engine's RPM limit, disables the kickdown function. This prevents over-revving the engine. It also means that without Klima, these models won't kick down at all. Some older models have two relays for these functions -- one relay for kickdown lock-out and another for the a/c compressor's clutch.
