If you decide to pass on the 1987 190DT please PM me its location.

I am always looking for one of those. .

If your only going to have one car (which I assume is the case) Then I too vote for the low miles W124. I love those cars, no matter which engine (even the gassers!!)

Comparing those two cars is akin to comparing apples & orangutans. I'm biased, but the 124 is the hands-down winner.

Again, as others have asked, if you aren't going to buy the low mileage '95 it would be a great service if you divulged it's location. It would also serve the car well to have one of the people in this enthusiast community own it.

My personal recommendation is BUY IT! It's a decision you will not regret.

You are worried about the rubber in the E300????? Uh, why not focus on the metal!!! I'm just sayin'.....

The 190 isn't close to the car the E300 is. They're ok, but simply at a different level. The 190D would be a quick little thing, but that is hardly a basis for a decision. And I'm not even going to get into the rogue T aspect!!

I love my '95 E300. And I routinely get 30-31 mpg in the city. Matter of fact I've only gotten below 30 on one tank. City/fwy mix with a majority fwy and the best I've done is 34.9
Worse city tank was 28-something, and as stated, just happened once.
So come on, you have a chance to buy an MB diesel with only 17K miles. If it isn't outrageous on the price then it is simply a no-brainer......

Just wanted to thank everyone for your good advice so far (especially you, Babymog ). I will go for the W124, so wish me luck! As soon as I sign the bill of sale, I will disclose the location and contact info of the owner of the car I did not pick! I am looking forward to this wonderful machine.

I test drove the 190D last Thursday, and I must say, not even my '91 or my '00 LS400s had the solid "thunk" and vault-like construction of Mercedes' entry-level car. I have driven a '87 300D and a '79 300TD, and they feel as if carved out of a single block of steel. It is also an honor to become part of such a tight and supportive community, and I look forward to seeing some of you in one of the yearly meetups... let's see where the next will be!

Contacting the owner tomorrow...
Wish me luck!

Wow, some unhappy NA 606's. I get 30 city and up to 37 highway (70mph on smooth interstate) out of my E300D. AC is always on. Lowest so far was a 25 mpg tank, but that was racing from DFW to Houston, 80-90 mph.

Yep, that is very 'real world' data for the OM606.
As has been stated, you just can't have an aversion to down shifting!!

Update:
I have found the perfect benz. It's currently undergoing some restoration, but I will post pics when ready. The model, engine and fuel, well, is a surprise , but you are definitely welcome to guess.

I took a look at the 190D turbo, all jack points rusted, bad paint repair on the body and leaky engine and transmission. Still, 95k miles for whoever wants it. The price was $3100, and the estimate from the bodyshop was about $3,500 in repairs. Will pass inspection, though, but definitely not the lifetime car I had in mind.

The owner of the 17k mile E300D changed his mind a month ago, so he did no want to sell. However, he called me today and said that he was willing to sell it to me. Unfortunately, I got a Mercedes already... (ouch!). I estimate he'll ask $11,000 to $13,000.

Any takers on any of these two cars? PM me and I will send you the info!

A rustbucket 190D 2.5T is about a $1500 car. Check my sig line - I have had them. A rust-free 190D 2.5T is a gem, but a rusty one is not worth having.

There is no such thing as a '95 E300D that is worth $13K.

I'm afraid it doesn't sound like there are any bargains to be had here.

Hey!!! I resemble that remark!!! I love my 190d rustbucket. It is "lighter" than stock, marks it's territory with little rust "ant hills" and you can see inside the unibody construction. It's like driving a rolling mercedes cutaway.

I paid $1350 for my one-owner rust-free 190D turbo, but it did have manual seats.

That's funny, you don't have it listed in your sig.

wow, 13K for the 95... just wow.
I think 8K would be fair to high. 13K unless totally garage kept and meticulously maintained by DATE, not by mileage is insane!
