My Miles and MPG for a 1981 240D

I use a spreadsheet to keep track of my miles, mpg, last oil change, etc.
Everytime I get fuel, change oil, I update my spreadsheet.

May 2006 bought my 240D 4 speed manual
drove daily between Raleigh NC and Fayetteville aprox 150-160 miles a day

2007 - used daily, but office let me work from home everyother day

2008 - job eliminated

2009 - retired

2010 - retired

Anyway I made a new sheet that just tracks Annual information.

YR Months YTD Miles YTD Gallons YTD MPG
2006 06 25,685 820.16 31.3
2007 12 24,434 765.65 31.9
2008 12 11,856 386.12 30.7
2009 12 7,512 255.72 29.4
2101 07 2,833 96.17 29.46

justed wanted to share my MPG for other 240D manual oweners to compare.

Dude, you get crazy good mileage. My 240D never did better than 28 and usually got about 22-23. I dipped below 20 on some occasions.

Got good MPG because most of those miles are at 55-65 MPH, very little stopping on highways, so just better MPG.. My last MPG was 24.4 in town, air on and lots of stop and go driving.

I have to wonder what your fuel supply pressure is like in the base of the injection pump. Also condition of fuel injectors if/once that is checked out.Remember my suspicion that low fuel injector pump base pressure might be an active contributor to the number one cylinder rod failure on the 616 engine over many years.

The gentlmen hanging around the thirty miles per gallon mark probably has good pressure.

similar mileage

Three years ago, I used to get about 30 MPG on petro around town. Around that time, I'd get 28.5MPG if I was traveling at 80mph on the Interstate.

Now I get about 27-28 on petro with mixed highway and in-town driving. It gets regular oil changes, valve adjustments, and I try to keep from hauling a lot of junk in the trunk. I've run enough Bio through it in its recent years to clean all the crap out of the tank, lines and pump. This week, I'm tracking in-town/highway mixed driving on B100 ... will report back.

Edit: This past winter my mileage got into the teens on petro diesel and one time it was 14! But I think that was the time I had left the car on for an hour while I was stopping at the apartment to keep it warm for the next errand. The whole time it was running, I don't think it got over 60 Celcius. West Texas winters are frigid sometimes and we definitely get winterized diesel.

Have you checked your odo against the mile markers on the interstate?

I have a simular experience, though not job/retirement wise. I use my '81 240D MT for a work car. I get 27 to 28 mpg. This is basically, country roads. I drive roughly 15 miles each way. I did drop to 27 mpg, but recently replaced the air cleaner.
I did notice about 32 mpg, when I did a tank full of highway driving at about 55 mph to 65 mph. That was only one tank full though. On another tankfull, I got 28 mpg doing about 70 mph.
I haven't calibrated my Odometer with highway milage markers. A GPS would do the same thing.

My 81 MT also averages around 30 mpg with mostly local commute under 15 mile round trip with the rare highway cruise. I always fill my tank right up to the filler neck and have not calibrated my odo.
I once saw 34 mpg.
The 82 auto is closer to 25 mpg but my teen daughter drives it and it has 2x the mileage of the 81

My '83 Euro 240D 4spd puts up great numbers on calibrated runs...the odometer doesn't work. Before you jump on me, I drive the same 49 miles roundtrip to work everyday, all highway, right past my (usual) diesel station.

Keeping it at 60-65 on the almost all highway drive has given up to 35 mpg. I'd expect better with the warmup period taken out.

I was blown away since my '82 US-spec Auto struggled for 25mpg on the same route.

And I think the Euro could use injector service...

My odo shows a total of 17 miles driven, while the GPS shows 16.8.

If I did my math correct, then my MPG is off just a little
Year Reported Corrected
2006 31.3 30.9
2007 31.9 31.5
2008 30.7 30.3
2009 29.4 29.0
2010 29.5 29.1

Don't know. Never checked.

The injectors seem to have been the originals. When I sold the car I advised the buyer to put some injectors in it when he had the motor pulled.

BTW, my 300D averaged around 25 with the automatic. I had to leave before I put many miles on it with the manual, but it seems to be up around 30.
