retrofit electric vacuum pump from w126 into w123
There is a tantalizing thread in the DIY section about how to do this, but when you click the link it goes nowhere. I'm still interested, but have no w126 experience. Can anyone tell me (or post a picture) of the electric vacuum pump of a w126. The next time I'm at the salvage yard I'd like to find one.

That seems like a long way for direct current to travel. Would the pump work better if mounted to the engine bay, closer to the battery?

Also, what year were these pumps installed? The Wikipedia page says the W126 line started in 1979, but surely they didn't have the electric pumps then? Does anyone know a year, or range of years to look for?

I'm pretty sure but not positive that 1st generation w126 (through MY85) were engine vacuum and the electric auxiliary vac pump was introduced in the 2nd generation (86-91). I don't know though. All it will take is one guy to say "My 85 300SD has electric vacuum" to prove me wrong. It's my best guess though.

I'd say your best guess gives me a great place to start at the salvage yard anyway. It would seem the later model car I can find would be better, since less wear and tear on the electric vacuum pump.

How great that the 81 w126's had one. Meanwhile, all of us w123 owners are wandering in the desert of non-working door locks. In the words of George from Seinfeld "Here I am rubbing two sticks together and you've got a Zippo".

It wouldn't seem that your locks dont work because of your vacuum pump The only folks "wandering in the desert of non-working door locks" are those that dont get a "mity vac" and track down why they dont work. After 30+ years some of the connectors and pods need replacing then you have a great system, lock the driver door and everythings locked, I love it.

Stevo - I've got a mity-vac, and use it often, which is where the problem comes in: the W123 vac system runs off a single vacuum pump. When any little part of the system goes wrong, the whole thing fails. If the various component of that system were broken apart, with each running off it's own vacuum pump, diagnosing and repairing problems wouldn't take as long, and when one part of the system fails, the others parts keep working. This is why I want to install the electric vacuum pump the W126's have. It's just a better system.

Gotta side with Stevo on this one. The reason George had sticks is because he wasn't real bright. A vacuum pump is a vacuum pump. If all you do is change the pump withoutout fixing the vacuum leaks you will have the same results. Now if as you indicate that you want everything on a seperate sytem that is going to be a ton of work. If you can pull that off you could much easier just fix what you have. But thats only MHO so for others that may want to follow you out of the desert please let them know how it goes. Thanks

Well since you want to go the electric vac pump route, it is in the trunk in a moisture proof area in it`s own little compartment. I don`t know if under the hood, and not protected from moisture, the longivity of it. something to consider.
The W124 has the pimp and I think the 190E/D also, but under the rear seat. might very well be the same pump. Having it in the trunk and having direct current running to it, seems to work ok. Charlie

IMO... This seems like a waste of time and resources to me. Once you understand the basics of the 123 system, it is pretty easy to troubleshoot.
If you need any help troubleshooting... Drop me a line in the PM folder.
