1987 300TD for $12,000!!! They hold some value, but really??
Just saw this ad for a 107k mile 300td and thought I would share. White with blue MBtex interior. Very clean, but $11,995? Highest I have seen recently is around $8000.
I know these are rare wagons and all...... http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/hnp/ctd/1839427010.html

An '87 300TD with 60K miles and a third seat sold recently for $22K. And it was NOT perfect. Are you interested in buying it? |

I personally would not pay that.
That being said, there are probably no more then a few hundred of these left in the states. This could possibly be one of the nicest examples left. I looked for three years before I found ours for $4500. Mine had 190,xxx miles on it when i bought it. I have a little rust in one jackpoint and a bit of bubling near 2 window seals, but it really runs great with the newly installed injectors, and turbo.

No - I don't want to buy it, so it is up for any of you
I got mine for $1500. When completely done I will realistically (it adds up fast) have about $5000 into it, and restored to my liking. Not to mention a thorough understanding of the car and lots of new parts/pieces and updates.......and the satisfaction knowing I restored it and saved it from being parted out.

A true one-owner car should have complete service records. Given the location, a thorough inspection for rust is required. Low miles is not a guarantee of a good car. The car will have sat a lot (107000/24 = ~4500 miles/year.) Many items (rubber parts, etc.) may need replacement simply due to age -- has the owner replaced them? If not, the new owner will have purchased a very expensive project car.

I'm not sure about the "Foreign Affairs" contact in this ad but, ...:
White with a blue interior is the most common color, because every dealership had one with a big SERVICE sticker down the side, run hard and put away wet usually, but properly maintained. It might show as a one-owner car on the title, as the dealerships don't usually title them, they run them on a Dealer plate and sell them with the original MSO and the second user is the first title-holder. Dealers would run the service vehicles for at least a year, many two, some more, depending on their budgets and how much use the car gets. Personally, I don't trust any mileage without documentation, especially with the known odometer problems in these cars. This car is no exception, but it is a common color with no options, and probably an ex-service beater. Easily worth $5,000 IMO.

There is a White 87 diesel wagon down here with Palomino and 134,000 miles. I think they were asking $13,500. The car looks near mint, was obviously garage kept and has all the service records.
I would not pay what they are asking for either of them. Especially considering the age and known ODO problems with any of these older cars. Nice cars none the less. That is very interesting about the "service thing". I have never heard that one before.

Just clicked-on the car and scrolled the pictures.
Looks nice (what little they're willing to show you) in the pictures - with the exception of the corrosion thingy going on under the hood/bonnet. That nixes it for me at almost any price. I swear, a couple three years of winter use in the north country does a number on the appearance factor under the hood! Buddy of mine has a '98 E300TD one year newer than mine, and 40K less miles than mine he got out of Chicago. What an ugly sight under the hood! I popped the hood on my '99 E300TD w/121K garaged/Texas/southern states miles on it for him to see, side-by-side with his car. He said; "looks almost new!" My '83 300SD with/305K miles @ 16 yrs. of age looked nearly as good as my '99 under the hood! Last edited by Skid Row Joe; 07-24-2010 at 06:09 PM. |

My first "real" car, the '85 quattro, looked great under the hood even though it was my daily until I bought the '91 300TE 4matic. Even when I had the 4matic I drove the quattro in the really bad weather, since it was so much better in snow, ... but I digress. My car was washed, under the hood and under the car, with lots of water, regularly, winter and summer. Still didn't have rust when I sold it two years ago (emotionally attached but it has been stored, not driven, so time to sell). Under-hood aluminum was clean, no corrosion on fasteners under the car, etc. My '91 4matic also looked new under the hood, mechanics would comment on it, and it looked that way when I sold it with 119,000miles in '96. Same cleaning and care, stayed clean. With that having been said, I looked for a 300TD for a couple of years, and didn't consider anything with a history in the rust belt. Most cars here are driven and neglected.

Thats a nice looking 300TD! I'd bet there are VERY few of those left in the USA with that low of mileage and in that condition. The price is probably within reason if you expect to have one that nice.

Looks OK for the price if that's the car you're shopping for. It would probably cost more to bring another car up to that condition.

I hope somebody here goes to see the car so that we find out if it is a peach or a pig.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Water rinsing = to negate the aluminum discoloration.
The '87 diesel wagons seem to have wide interest among almost all Benz owners, hope it goes to a good home. Quote:
