The older SDs 78-80 have a 722.120 tranny and the 81-85 SDs have the 722.303. Not sure about the 350sdl. If you try to put a 722.120 on your '85, it will physically bolt up, but you wont have a speedometer, no NSS, no kickdown, the bowden is a lever action and the modulator is on the opposite side and the tranny cooler lines are in different spots.

IIRC the starters are on the other side on 603s

Edit: Re-read and felt that I should have provided a bit more info. Model year 1986+ had 603.xxx engines (the 300 and 350SDL) and would not work in an OM617 equipped car. If you wanted to use the transmission, you would have to overcome the starter location being on the opposite side.

IIRC something about the 85 SD means it has a different transmission from 81-84. Maybe it's only gear ratios.

sixto is right. The 85 sd is different from other years of that body style. I know there are threads about this, with a reference to a separate site that covers this. whunter is a genius and very helpful in regards to links/references.

The only thing different in the 85 is the torque converter, you can keep your 85 torque converter and use it with a pre-85 one to get the same benefit.

SDL transmission will not work. As stated above the starter is on the wrong side. Sorry

IIRC the tach pick up is also in the bell housing instead of on the crankshaft nose.
