cluster is apart, clock movement missing suggestions please
My cluster is apart right now to fix a few issues it had. Tach has clock face printed below but no clock movement!
Does anyone have suggestions on what I could do with it? I don't plan on replacing the clock movement. the cd player has one on it anyways. I was considering picking up a volt gauge, taking it apart and fitting it in place of the clock, not sure how I would fit the face, possibly just stick it over? I will be cleaning the cluster, painting the needles orange, fixed the tach (unplugged), fixed the odometer (drive gear pulled out so it didn't contact the worm gear) just need to figure out the missing clock. Need to have this back together for monday. Auto parts / radio shack / craft or hobbie store type suggestions only. |

Start by telling us what kind of car you have. Honda, Toyota, or maybe even Mercedes? And the model and the year and all that.

The search is a powerful tool. Year, Make and Model help in a post.
On the 123 it can be capacitors of different sizes. Along with a couple other things. It has been a while since I read about it. But, the info. is here.

it is a 1985 190d. Not a technical repair question, looking for ideas of what to do with the missing clock movement as the clock numbers are painted on the face of the tach.

looks something like this, minus the clack hands. The clock numbers and the hole are there, movement is missing. I was debating picking up a volt gauge with similar hands and fitting it in place of the clock. I just took apart an old Stewart Warner volt gauge I had kicking around, found I need to get one that has the hands in the middle for simplicity. Also the face didn't look right when I placed it over the clock. Too colorful. Idea seems sound though. I was looking for input on the situation and open to any suggestions. The only reason I am even trying do do this is the clock is missing, the cluster is apart and I don't want to take it apart again to fix this later. Also, the cd player has a clock and don't really see the need to fix this one.
I was thinking of taking this gauge apart, fitting the face over the clock (which happens to be 2") and fitting the gauge movement behind. I would paint the needle at the same time I paint the others. Last edited by weird beard; 07-24-2010 at 11:01 PM. |

that looks like a tach from a gasser, the diesels don't usually have the redline on them.

It was easier to take a picture off an ebay ad, already hosted. Mine does not go that high.

gotcha...
you might find a decent vacuum/pressure gauge to install there and have mitivac onboard?

If you're going to place the circular face over the circular clock, won't that cover the hole from the clock hands? You shouldn't need to stay concentric if there's room to drill out an offset hole just above 6 o'clock and mount the gauge.

Mityvac is a hand pumped vacuum tester used to test for vacuum leaks, vacuum solenoid (vacuum element) function, bleed brakes, etc. http://www.mityvac.com/pages/products_hvp.asp Not really much point to a vacuum gauge as when you have a leak or pump failure you'll know from failed systems and the gauge in the dash won't tell you anything useful to diagnose it.
If you're bent on a voltmeter, you can scan or digitally photograph the gauge face and then "Photoshop" or use whatever graphics program you have to alter it to your liking, then print it out and paste it on. I'd go for the OE clock. An alternative: I once placed a short hub clock (from Michael's or the like) in a dead Jeep clock. I cut off the integral battery box to get it to fit and soldered wires to the battery leads. You can run the leads down to an AA battery box from Radio Shack velcro'd under of the dash.

for $3 this might get gutted and installed. Never thought of remotely mounting the battery.

An mpg meter would be nice. Get a couple of flow meters and somehow aggregate the signals (inbound minus return). Hopefully your car has a vehicle speed sensor. Divide speed signal by net flow signal and multiply by whatever factor to display mpg.
Or get a small tach to replace the clock display and use the tach scale for mpg. Unless you get over 60 mpg steady state Jeremy, would it be possible to subvert the outside temp gauge to display instantaneous mpg? I'd rather know that than outside temperature. Sixto 87 300D |

Well, I just waited until the time was correct to put in a new battery. didn't worry about Daylite Saving Time. Seriously. I was a kid.
