Price check 124D Turbo

Hi All,

After many happy years of dieseldom I'm probably going to sell my 124 and wanted to get a better handle on fair value. I realize these are priced all over the place but the more input I have the better.

1987 White/Palomino
176K miles
No rust at all (CA car from new), shiny paint
A couple of minor fender benders - now fixed except for one minor ding
No major accidents
Interior 8 out of ten, front seats recovered with matching MB Tex, dash like new
A/C works fine but anemic (134A conversion long ago)
Everything else works - this is my second diesel and I do 90% of the upkeep
Original 14 head with no overheating or signs of problems
Aftermarket (Sony) stereo headunit with bluetooth phone and iPod connection
Tires almost new
Have used B100 occasionally with no issues
Regular oil changes using Redline diesel oil

I've owned her for about 8 years and it's been a terrific, reliable car. Unfortunately my daughter (who now drives it) is headed off to college in snow country and hasn't a clue how to drive in the slippery stuff. As a result we're moving to a FWD or 4WD that she can use at school. What do you think? On Ebay I see rats selling for $1k and the rare superlow creampuffs for $7K. I appreciate the feedback.

I'll try to post some tonight.

Snow tires. Nokian Hakkapuleta would be my first choice, Dunlop Graspic the second, it'll run circles around any FWD junk and she won't end up backwards in a snowdrift. A 50# bag of sand in the trunk is a good idea also.

Here's the fender "ding". It's pretty small.

Snow tires.
I thought of that but she'll be on the East Coast, we'll be on the West Coast (along with the other set of tires).

Looks nice, wish I didn't already have one into which I've put way too much money. Yours is in better shape, too, oh well. Maybe I should at least spend $6 on bridge toll and come see it.

I'll be curious to see replies, our cars are nearly identical.

Yeah like many on this board I tend to over maintain but given the reliability and overall economy of these cars I have no regrets....nor probably should you.

Haven't decided whether to put it on Craigslist or Ebay. I'm not in a hurry so not sure when I'll list it but will let you know so you can get a data point.

So when can I come see it?

I spent $5700 on a car like that, same mileage, which is now my daily driver. Spotted it on craigslist, 2.5 years ago.

You don't mention many of the typical "larger ticket" upkeep items so I assume it needs a lot. Just like mine did, that I've subsequently done.

I think I'm pretty much up to date on that stuff. Vac pods and delivery seals both done in the last couple of years (by me); and A/C compressor replaced (with new...after about 2 rebuilds failed) about 4+/- years ago and tranny replaced with rebuilt at about 150K miles - both done by pros. No issues that I'm aware of with anything else. These are great daily drivers and can last a long time if you take good care of them. However, as you undoubtably know, if you don't do a fair amount of your own work on them they'll eat you alive.
