What's wrong in this picture.

This is an 85 300D. I may go down to Houston, a 160 miles trip, to have a look at it but am suspicious about a couple of things.

The air filter element location.
The turbo has a device on the top front with a vacuum line. Don't know what that is.
And the Vacuum shift regulator on the top of the valve cover looks different and doesn't have vacuum lines.

I know the pics are bad. I didn't take them

That's a California emissions set up. Check to see that the recall repair was performed. That year had the Trap-Ox, which tended to get plugged up, and then causing damamge to the turbo.

Yep, that is a calif. version. The fed. has the turbo down below, a different heat shield setup and the "rattle style" air cleaner.

I like the SD style air cleaner setup.

Yes 7 less hp with this setup and supposedly 15 lb less peak Torque--Easy fix, federal turbo--I have one here in DFW, Keep the 85 aircleaner--I like em much better than the rattlecan---except the $50 replacement price every couple yrs.

The 85's had that turbo with the "extra" section. I have read it's not really an issue as it's just an ARV used in conjunction with the EGR. Perhaps you can simply plug it off.
It seems someone has disabled some of the EGR stuff already.

Absolutely... One of the first things I did when I got my 85 was disable the ARV and EGR. I removed a lot of the plumbing. But, I kept all the components, lines, etc., just in case....

Those little switchover valves are $$$...

was going to buy the car, take the motor and use my turbo, but at the end of all my engine knocking crap i've decided to perform an overhaul on it.

i'll start by removing the engine and looking at the rod bearing then going from there.
