sorry for the double post

88 300te
Good morning MB lovers. I am in the process of acquiring a 1988 300TE thru Ebay and would like to ask for help. I know it is kinda late for this but if anyone is located near Alpharetta, GA, could you please look and do the usual visual and if possible try to test drive it and look for any signs of trouble. This is for my Aunt and I don't want it to be a money pit. Thanks in advance everyone.

Yup, it ended and I am the high bidder. I honestly didn't think it would go this low, just wanted to try out the auction.
Thanks

Typical 124 problems:

Leaking front timing chain cover

Leaking transmission gasket

Bad flex disk

Needs a valve job about 160,000 miles

Idle problems, various causes and fixes -- I replaced all the vaccuum line ends and idle control valve hoses, and pretty much cured mine.

Climate control (I got a deal on mine because the AC didn't work)

Upper links on rear suspension

Sunroof lifting angles broken

Sagging springs on driver's seat

Cruise control failure

None of these are huge problems, just not free to fix. The only large trouble is the occasional engine with an oil leak at the front or rear oil gallery -- usually requires a new head gasket to fix, sometimes a lead plug, too.

Specific to the wagon:

Self-leveling woes -- bad accumulators (VERY hard ride -- eventually locks the suspension, only the tires give!), bad self-leveling valve, lets rear sag, bad struts, let rear sag, bad leveling pump (on the rear of the power steering pump).

Only the pump is horribly expensive -- struts are a couple hundred each, the accumulators are about $90 and easy to change, valve isn't too bad.

Unless it is really junk (unlikely unless the PO never changed the oil), your aunt will love this car!

Peter

Thanks for the input Peter. Anyone have experience with shipping cars? Around how much are we looking at? What's a good company to use for shipping? Again, thanks to this list.
