85 300SD fuel filter change out

Okay here goes. I have looked at a few articles regarding the filters and with excellent help from many on this site determined that the dealership was Wrong!. Anyway I am changing the screw on filter and the oil rings involved , after this is done do I need to use the primer pump when done? I have concerns that I might be pulling air into the system and the old primer pump might be one of many culprits. Also any direction to a tech article on adjusting the valves. I am not certain when they were done last. The car sat for a long time and I am trying to run some highway miles as a sort of shakedown so if it is gonna fail do it here near my home. It was running well however about a week ago it started the notoriuos rough idle at start up accompanied by whiteish smoke ( it starts right up though) The rough idle continues and gets worse when placed in gear and the brakes are on. I believe the motor mounts may be a part of the problem and in fact will be replaced soon. When in gear it idles so rough you can hear the air cleaner housing hitting the firewall where the battery resides.

You shouldn't need to prime or bleed by hand if you fill the filter with clean fuel before installing. The engine might stumble for a few seconds.

Sounds like you have a problem with the glow relay or some tired glow plugs.

Yeah, I have a set of new plugs and have been troubleshooting an issue with an Anti lock light that comes on and stays on and a glow plug light that does not come on. By the way did these have an automatic return on the turn signal stalk ? This one has to be moved to the center detente manually.

Yes, they were self canceling turn signals

There is a plastic thingy under the steering wheel that cancels the turn signals; it has probably broken or worn down so that it no longer works. I'm not sure exactly which part would need to be replaced but you could probably find it in EPC.

Thanks, Toomany MBZ. As always you have come through. I looked through a few aftermarket repair manuals for the Diesels and no one mentioned it. Although as someone who has worked on gas Mbnz's and Porsche's it was a thought.
Thanks
Again

I use Anti-Seiz on the plugs, never had any problems with them getting stuck or not working properly.
