Hateful oil cooler line job done!
I am a new member here and have spent ALOT of time reading back posts on this forum. Out of all the Benz forums, this seems to be the best one out there. I decided to replace the oil cooler lines on my 83 300TD, and am glad to say they are done and do not leak. They kicked my rear end I have to say. I went ahead and just cut the steel fittings off the oil cooler with a saw to avoid galling the threads. I would recommend that anyday to avoid messing up the threads, when working at night without another cooler on hand! Anyway, glad I did it and have piece of mind about those hoses. They were the original ones, and looked fine, but they do not last forever. Better to replace now as cheap insurance. Attached a picture of our wagon. I really like this car! Too bad my wife drives it and not me.

Welcome to the forum.
Yeah the oil cooler lines can be a pain to replace. they don`t last for ever like you said. with the hot oil going through for 20 years they do get cooked. when I changed mine they had a date of 84 on the crimp, and the lower one was like a sprinkler. . Looks like you better find a MB for yourself to enjoy. Charlie

Nice colored wagon. Is it "Ascot Grey"?

It is Ascot Grey. Previous owner kept it in his barn with a car cover over it. He got it from his mother in law, so pretty much a 1 family car. Most of my time has been sorting out small issues, but I always seem to find something to do on it. My wife thinks I am too particular, but she does enjoy the car. One thing I have put my foot down on though, the beagle cannot ride in it!

Good call!
Better to "leave the car in the barn" than to "bring the barn into the car"....

The problem is that those compression fittings are only supposed to be torqued to a low number like 14lb and everyone torques them to 500lb.

over torqued
Yeah, I'm pretty bad about over torqueing stuff, too. I hate it when I can get a bolt/nut undone.
Welcome to the forum. You might want to update your location. Guys nearby like to admire and sometimes help wrench newbies.

Thanks for the welcome. I updated my location. My next job today is to replace the trans oil cooler lines, and the right side engine mount and shock. Did the left side with the oil cooler lines. I am going to take some pics of it loaded down with all the kids and my wife to show how to REALLY use a wagon!

Heheh don't mean to be a trickster but it took me almost 15 minutes max to get the new lines in. Upper and lower.
The trick is to send the line directly down between the power steering pump pipes. You'll need to bend the rubber portion back. But once you route the rubber correctly all you need to do is crawl back under the car and push the metal end of the lines up towards its connector. I used a pair of robo wrenches to tighten the line and my trusty 1 1/16 wrench to add a bit more torque down. I was almost too surprised at how easy it was. My axle R&R was harder. Oh nice wagon too

Wait where is that rubber?

It sits between the clamp and the tube where the tube runs along the oil pan. Without it, the metal clamp will eat through the tube. BTDT
