AC ??'s Inside blower fan turns on and off

1984 300D 300+k miles converted over to 134a with a new AC compressor, dryer, & expansion valve 4 months ago. Worked fine for 2 months:

The inside AC blower fan sometimes works and sometimes not. When it is not working it will come on by itself when i'm driving. Usually when it does start working it will continue to work but even then it seems like the fan speed varies a little. The compressor is turning on when the AC selector is pressed and turns off when the off button is pressed. When working the AC blows about 49 out of the side vents.

Do you guys have any idea where to start or what to look for? I NEED AC here in Central Florida's heat!!!!

Thank you for ANY help you can offer!!!!!
Hip

ps: on a side note i know this car has some vacuum issues: LR door won't lock, shifts hard, vacuum actuator to direct the air out of the center vent is bad(only blows out of the defrost vents), and the mono valve(heat exchange valve i think its called) is slow to change from heat to cold and back.

Have you looked at the brushes on the blower motor?

And is this only in "Auto" or is it not blowing with the fan switch in any position?

It is when the fan switch in the high position. In auto or on low the fan barely seems to blow.

Can blower brushes be replaced? or is a blower fan assembly swap required?

^ I understand, yes they can, but it's difficult removing the fan from the motor to get to 'em.

So the fan swap is the way to go it seems!

???

The brushes are on the opposite side of the motor that the fan is on. Also, the fan comes off the motor VERY easily. Just be sure to mark the shaft and the fan with a sharpie so you can get it back into the exact same position as the fan is balanced.

Yes the brushes are replaceable. There is a thread on all of this in the Resources section. I was going to replace mine. But, it looked like they still had some life in them, so I shimmed some cardboard in behind the brush springs.

Just going by what I heard, which is why I started the sentence with "I understand...".
I did a fan swap only to find out the CCU itself was the problem.

Thank you guys. It has been funny yesterday. If I turn right the fan comes on full speed, If I turn left the fan almost stops.

Thank you all for the replies. I hope to remove the fan this weekend and check it out. and I may clean the evap while it's out with that spray cleaner and water hose. couldn't hurt!

Good call!!

Be sure your condensation drain tube is in good shape before you blast too much water in there.

Hip001 has the same problem I have with the fan in my '87 124. I removed the CCU over the weekend & resoldered some connections on the circuit board. When I reinstalled it, the fan started working properly. I accidentially wiggled some of the wires going from the CCU plug & the fan started screwing up again. Wonder if the wiring harness to the fan control side of the CCU is messed up? Is there a replacement available & does any one know how much of a PITA it would be to change out? Apparently the fan motor itself is OK.
