What happened to my windows, I'm stumped!

Tonight as I was driving home in my 83 300D, all my windows stopped working. The pass side were already down and the driver's side were up. None of the switch were working, I assume it was a fuse but all the fuses are ok. I didn't spill anything. I'm stumped what it can be. It would be a rare coincidence that all 4 switches would go at the same time. Any thoughts? Thanks.

The relays on the driver fender are for the auxiliary fan (front) and compressor (rear). They are arranged longitudinally.

Window relays are behind the instrument cluster.

So I have to take out the instrument cluster or are they under the hood? I gather that the car takes 2 relays. It is rare that they both go out together?

Solved!

Well I checked the fuses and pulled the switches and yes, they did receive power. Then I check all light switches, sunroof, warning, etc. and found out that the turn signals were out. I looked at the fuse which looked good but when I took it out, the top fell off! In fuse position #12 not only does it fuse the turn signals but it fuses the window relay! Thank goodness, I almost ordered 2 relays from the dealer for $60. It was killing me with the windows up and my a/c out in this freakin' hot weather.

i don't know how, but those cheezy fuses get microscopic hairline cracks in em and you got to poke at em to find out their bad. why did they continue to use those lousy fuses for so long?

This happened to me recently - yes, the window fuse looked good but fell apart when I removed it.

I believe the window motors use two separate fuses but the power window relay uses another, separate fuse that also powers the turn signals. That is the one that failed. Usually it's one of the other fuses and then two windows (one front, one rear, diagonally) won't work.

One of the first things I did to my 300D was to replace all the mish mash of fuses the PO had in there. $9 from ebay as I remember and I have extra fuses too. All are now copper.
