Can I remove my AC clutch in the car

I have an 84 190e with the R4 compressor. The electrical terminal has come loose on the ground side of the coil. It is not self grounding either. If I can get the clutch off I can repair or replace the coil without blowing the precious R12 refrigerant. Anyone know if this can be done & if so how. Cheers Dan

Autozone "rents" the puller tool for the clutch. This article was on the replacement of the shaft seal, but shows how to get the clutch and snap rings out. It's bee awhe since I've had an r4 apart, but if I remember correctly the pulley/coil is held on with a snap ring. You will need a puller to pull the pulley/bearing assembly from the shaft. I'm sure somebody else will chime in. You can remove the shaft nut with an impact if you can't find a spanner wrench.

A 190E has an R4? I thought they all had ND compressors.

The trouble with what you propose is you don't have a good line of sight even with the radiator out of the way. Practice at the pick-n-pull if you have such things in BC.

I replaced the clutch of the ND compressor in my car without removing the radiator. I had to find just the right pair of snap ring pliers to fit in the tight clearance between the clutch and radiator. Thankfully Harbor Freight has a wide range of snap ring pliers.

i believe 190e from '83-mid-'85 had a different kind of ac compressor than later model 190's

"pre-r12 refrigerant"? There is no such thing. Unless you mean R11 which I think went away in the 50s?

Seems kinda dicy that this is going to work

R4 is the compressor model not the refrigerant. R11 was used into the 1990s in large centrifugal chillers. It may still be in use in some non upgraded units. I may pull the rad to take a look. A new clutch coil is likely so I may just bite the bullet and get a new compressor. Thanks guys. Dan

Being in Canada and still having an R12 system would be reason enough for me to work on the clutch and not touch the rest of the compressor

It is not as bad as it seems in Canada

I actually have a 40lb can of R12 from days gone by but I also have several cars which might need it so don't want to waste any. If you know some old time refrig mechanics they can usually put their hands on some. Cheers Dan

Check funola's thread on the R4 compressor. I think it's got all the links you'll need.

If they've got Autozone in Canada, then you should be able to pull the clutch without removing the compressor. It's basically a center nut, then a puller, then a snap ring, then another puller for the clutch coil.
