Help: Need An Engine for a 1983 300SD

Fellas,
A good buddy of mine drives a cosmetically pristine 1983 300SD. Last week, he blew the engine on it. Evidently the engine started leaking/consuming a lot of oil lately and he had forgotten to add oil. Long story short, the engine is cooked.
The car is in great shape and he wants to install a rebuilt engine into it.
-He is located in Chicago
-Where can he source an engine for this car?
-Do any forum members have a good one for sale?
-Are there any other engine models that can be installed (without major rewiring, engine mounts, etc) in this car other than the OM617 that are better performing?
-What modifications can he do to the OM617 rebuilt engine that will make it produce more power?
Thanks for any help

Depending on his budget, you can go 3 ways. Metric motors, Junkyard pull or rebuild the original block

Metric motors is very expensive, though you get a new block, you swap some accessories from the original engine and your good to go after getting it in the car (google metric motors)

Junkyard pull is a crapshoot, it will work and be fine or need some repair or be in the same situation

Rebuilding the original block... to borrow a phrase Someone else has said here, is opening a can of worms, you dont know whats happened with a cooked engine

A fourth option is to find a rust bucket or banged up car with a proven good engine - for around $500 - and recover some of the money when you sell parts and scrap it

Go with the motor from a forum member!! You know its going to be well cared for & genuine!!
If the freight to Australia wasnt prohibitive, thats what I would do.

I have an SD engine on the floor of my garage. It leaks badly, it has low to mid compression. but it runs strong

I'd give it to ya, but your kinda far away. I need to get rid of this engine, but I don't want to throw it away.
