Oil Change Observations

I changed the oil the other day. I had been using 15-w40 rotella and changed to 15-w40 delvac. I noticed oil pressure at idle to sit lower with the delvac.

I had previously changed th filter and was supplied with a flat rubber seal for the filter housing. I had trouble getting it back on and have had an oil pancake under the car for a while. I could tell it was leaking at the filter housing. The filter I bought the other day had two seals, the flat and an O-ring. I decided to try the O-ring. Not only was it easy to get back together but I have no leaks.

Anybody had this experience?

The flat gasket is for another application (Ford 9N tractor, I think!!!)

The o-ring is the proper seal -- no way that flat gasket will ever seal the canister to the housing!

Thanks for clearing this up.

I bought the first filter at O,reiley's it only had the flat seal. This filter I got at Roy Rogers (local import parts) , it is a Bosch and came with both. When I bought the car it had a flat seal on it.

I now have a 25 year old car that doesn't leak anything !

Just curious, what did you pay for this filter. The OEM filters available at Fastlane should be about $6-$7. With OEM, there is no doubt about the part fitting. For oil filters, you'll see Mann and Hengst. As a matter of fact, if you look at the oil filter housing, there should be a sticker that say Mann on it. Your air filter cover will say the same.

I paid about $8 for a Bosch. I was crunched for time and bad weather was moving in. Wanted to fix the leak and change the oil. I try to buy OEM but sometimes surcurmstances dictate otherwise. ie, yesterday my brakes started to go, went to O'Reileys and got a rebuilt ATE master cylinder $25, and Wagner rear hoses $9 ea. I will do the brakes before I go to the jobsite and then Xmas shopping.
