Only One Hybrid Car Pays Back Its Owners Mercedes Diesel

Interesting reading!!

http://news.discovery.com/tech/only-one-hybrid-pays-back.html

A Big Benz ?!?!?
It's one you may not even have put on your short list: the 2010 Mercedes-Benz S 400 Hybrid, a mild-hybrid version of the large, pricey, prestigious full-size http://www.allcarselectric.com/category/luxury,new luxury sedan. It cost about $5,000 less over five years than its counterpart with a gasoline engine. (That payback will likely be smaller in the U.S., where gas is cheaper and model pricing may differ as well.)

I've taken a ride in one, it's a very nice car and the V6 launches it just fine. Seeing as the S400 is a gasser, does this thread belong here?

WOW your 2011 hybrid S-Class gets 27 MPG! hey, wait, my technologically inferior, 27 year old S-Class gets 27 MPG on a bad day.... Wow this is ground breaking technology!

Your car has a Lithium Ion battery pack... Did I mention my car can run without the battery?

Your 300SD may get 27 MPG, but it does 0-60 in 13 seconds and has 123 hp. For a new car to get the same mileage as your SD with the ability to do 0-60 in 7.3 seconds and 295 hp shows that there has been a nice technological advancement in MB engine efficiency over the past 30 years.

I admitted my car is technologically inferior. thats why I like it. I tend to like things that "Keep It Simple Stupid". I think that has to do with why my car has almost 400k on it. I'm not saying the old cars are better, or this thing won't sell. I'm just saying its not shocking for a large car to get 27mpg. I'd actually expect better for that kind of money.

Thread hijack in process!

I wouldn't call your SD technologically inferior. Many of the features that were standard on it back in the 80s weren't available on other cars until the 90s. I believe the W126 was a trailblazer in terms of automotive technology. It was so far ahead of it's time that it was produced for 12 years and able to stay at the forefront for most of those years. What cars today can boast a production run of 12 years and stay at the top for most of that time?

Thread hijack over.

How many cars even have a production run of 12 years these days?

By half that age, the "new" model is so old that people just stop buying them, unless they're very cheap. Trailing edge vehicles can have longer runs, because they're cheap, and and it's cheaper not to change them in any significant way. But these have no leading edge features.

So what's the point of this discussion again? That our old cars are good ones... Yes, we know that.

An S400 Hybrid, lessee... $108,000 where I live, umm...

WOULD NEVER PAY ENOUGH BACK to me as the owner to make it worthwhile.

If the thing ran on AIR only for 10 years, then yes, maybe, if you only had to top up the air tank after that and run it again for 10 more years.

Eeesh.... why can't we get the excellent economy engine stuff in less-luxo wrappers?

I think this is exactly why we're talking about this gasser in the diesel forum. The SD was the only luxo car ever made with fuel economy in mind. there are bound to be comparisons between this hybrid and the SD lineup.

I really like the idea of a luxury car with the focus on economy. especially one thats built to last. I really love the fact that my grandmother bought the SD. its very nice, she got her moneys worth driving it for 16 years. then the car was still nice enough, reliable enough, and nice enough on fuel that it was able to passed to my dad for 2 years and then on to me for the last 9 years. I think that makes the car well worth its luxury price tag. and makes the car more of an investment... and isn't that the point of this article, the car paying you back as a form of an investment.

Sadly I'm not sure Hybrid technology can take the abuse that 27 years of driving puts on a car.

FYI, the diesel S-class will be returning to the states next year as the S350. Hmm..., not a good omen, diesel S-classes with the 350 designation don't always have the best reputations.
