SpeedTuning Stage 2 Chip Installed Today

All I can say is "Wow". It really makes the car come to life. Here are a couple of points I noticed:
-Much less acceleration lag from a stopped position
-"Peppier" all around
-I haven't put the accelerator all the way down on it yet, but I was chirping my wheels while accelerating in 2nd and 3rd gear. I run 235 tires.
-It seems like my transmission is shifting much more smoothly from 1st to 2nd gear. I don't know why or who this happened, but it just seems much smoother now.
-I highly recommend this

Tell us more. Where'd you get it, what's it cost? Was it easy to install? Etc.

I got it from speedtuningusa.com. My contact there was with Oliver. I got the following mods:
-Stage 2 Programming (supposedly +60hp/+100tq)
-EGR Kill Program
-Total cost with overnight shipping was $410

It was very easy to remove/reinstall. Remove a few screws, disconnect some wires, and you can pull your entire ECU out of the engine bay. Just reverse the process for reinstallation.

I spoke with Oliver about the other mods I can do to help the chip. I'm having a 3" straight pipe exhaust custom made and installed over the weekend. Plus, I'm exploring a bigger intercooler on the car. Anybody put a bigger intercooler on the E300DT yet?

Second time

I now have a 1996 E300 , previously a 1999 E300 turbo. The 96 just received a turbo and manifold from a 99. I'm hopeing that Oliver can do the magic on this 96 the way he did my old 99.
As for your search for more power, I do not think you will find a higher flow intercooler. But I used a manual boost controller. It's commonly found on Ebay. I also installed a gauge. I'm well aware of the vac. controlled waste gate. It's a simple install as far as the boost controller. Think of it as a reverse process. Normally boost pressure is vented to atmosphere to gain boost. In this situation you need to run two full lines, spliced into the vac. vent line found near the ECM. Most controllers indicate a + and - . Since your running vac. not boost, + is - ,and - is +. I personally ran about 20 psi.

I had the Stage II program installed in the 2006 Jetta TDI I used to own. It made a huge difference. I was sent a file that I downloaded and then with a cable connected to the diagnostic port the Stage II program overwrote the stock program. I liked this method better than removing the ECU and sending it away to be reprogrammed.

If you are planning on trying to turn a N/A 606 into a turbo it is not that easy. First of all the engine itself isn't identical (the pistons are oil cooled in the turbo and not in the N/A)...plus you can't just bolt a turbo on and get more power. You'll need to adjust the fuel injection too which means tinkering with the IP/ECU and getting the boost sensor to "talk" to the ECU. Frankly it just sounds like an exercise in futility when the turbo 606 isn't all that costly now...if you wanted a turbo you probably should have just bought another '98 or '99...just my unsolicited $0.02.

Also, my '98 was chipped the same way as the OP's...it was the best mod and money I spent on that car. Better performance, plus 10% better fuel economy...I do miss that car!

If you are asking about whether there is an issue of chipping the car and it having an effect on reliability well, that's certainly an issue with an older car. If other parts of your drivetrain (tranny, flex joints, diff) are tired and already on the verge of failure then this will advance their demise. But if your car is otherwise well maintained it will not be an issue as these cars are built to handle more power than the chipped version of these engines put out.

Speedtuning is not far from where you are located (according to your sig) - you can go there and Oli will set you up while you wait. This is the single best money you will spend on your OM606 if you like a little more umph when you drive.

Waiting to get parts back

I sent my injectors to Sean Watts and the computer to Speed tuning. Oliver at speed tuning is compensating for the 96 non turbo fuel enrichment with 99 turbo install. He is doing basically a stage 2 tune with a little tweaking. Note that the pistons are oil cooled on naturally aspired motors, sqirters are there. They are just of a different design piston, yes the turbo pistons would be a better choice, but others have done a similiar build with a non turbo model. It can be done, without K-BOOM!!! Also note there is no boost pressure sensor on this or most other custom turbo vehicles to comunicate with the ECM. I will post back with results.

Only question I would have is what happend when you have a mystery CEL and need to have the dealer/authorized mechanic hook it up to their diagnostic computer. Will the ECU still play nice with their system?

I have thrown a CEL since doing the chip tuning. It was a code for a faulty MAF. I have a Snap-On computer reader specific for Mercedes. It had no problem identifying the CEL codes, etc. I don't think this is the same as the Dealer's computer, but my guess is it won't be a problem.
