1987 300D Transmission Filter Kit Questions
 

I have ordered transmission filter kits from two different places now, and both have sent me the "wrong" filter kit. The transmission filter itself is fine, but the gasket is the wrong shape. When I took off the pan, I thought "Hey, this is the same pan that is on my 1982 300D."

So I did some checking on Fastlane. The filter kit for the 1982 300D also fits the 1987 300E (yes, the E model). According to FastLane, the "proper" filter kit for the 1987 300D also fits the 1990 through 1993 series 300D.

To describe further, the transmission pan gasket on both my '82 and '87 is the same width front and back halves (symmetrical). The gasket they're sending me is narrower on one side (not sure if it would be the front or the back.)

So, I wonder if a 300E transmission got put in the car? Or if some of these parts places are sending out the wrong part? I did check Performance Products and they show the same filter kit for both the '82 and '87.

Any comments on these transmission filter kits? Any troubles in getting the right gasket?

2 days ago I did a fluid/filter change on my 300TD's transmission. The filter kit was made by Elring (Germany). One piece of paper that came with this kit listed all the models it fit. The W124 series is not listed. It list both gas and diesel models though. The 107 SLs, the turbo W123's, W126 350 SD, W140 SD, W140 400SE and SEL, W140 S420 and the W201 (190Es). I think that if there is some difference in the trans. between gas and diesel, it doesn't mean they can't have the same filter and pan shape. I have a catalog, one of many, and it list your transmission as a 722.317

Thank you. That tends to confirm what I'm thinking - that the two parts places I ordered from sent the incorrect part. They were Meistersatz (or something like that) by the way. Nice looking quality.

I was pretty unhappy because I had the pan pulled on the car before finding out the new gasket wouldn't fit, and the old gasket was cracked and shrinking. Had to try twice to get it to seal.

Hint: If transmission fluid is pouring from the transmission at the same rate you're putting it in at the filler, the transmission will never get filled. :)

Its nice to have two cars that use some of the same parts. Why the heck Mercedes had to change the oil filter between 1982 and 1987 on the diesels I'll never figure out!

There is one outfit that I have ordered parts from that list 3 different transmission filter kits for the 300D,TDs. It depends on the transmission in your car. I think they're all 722 but it's the last three numbers that makes the difference. Like the car's number. A 300D Turbo is a W123.123, but the wagon version is a W123.193. One more example, the engines. Even though both of my Benzes have the same 3.0, 5 cyl diesel, the SD has the 617.950 engine and the 300TD '81-'85, has the 617.952 engine.
I just went and did a little research. according to the outfits online catalog the part number for your filter kit should be 126-270-02-98. Bear in mind that your car was only made for 1 year. That's when Mercedes was messing around the 'traps". When that was a complete failure, they dropped that diesel engine that's in your car, and went with the 2.5 diesel that was originally in the 190D.
