Does anyone want to trade a 5 speed for a 5 speed?

I recently bought an 83 W123 euro spec Mercedes Benz 200 with a 5 speed and LPG conversion. I bought the car for the 5 speed so that I can fit it to my 73 280CE which already has a 4 speed manual.

The 200 has the M102 engine and apparently, the 5 speed from this car is not a direct bolt up to the M110 engine so i'm now looking for a 5 speed that would bolt up to an M110 (I guess either from a 280E, CE or SE/L).

As I have been told, it will mate to the following engines:

OM601.921
OM603.961
OM603.960
OM602.911
OM602.961
OM602.962
OM603.970
OM603.971
OM606.910
OM606.912
OM606.962

I'm only interested in a trade and not in selling this set up.

soooo, your transmission fits a 602/3/6 and you want one for a 616 style or vise versa?
I'm sure somebody will want your 5speed that fits the 616/617 block. (starter on passenger side) and the starter on driver's side 5 speeds are pretty easy to find. I'd love the driveshaft for that car, if you find a swap candidate.

Actually I also need the 5 speed with a starter on the passenger side. This is where it currently lives on my 280CE with 4 speed.

I don't now anything about diesels (except that they make a racket and smell funny ). I just want to upgrade my M110 powered 280CE from a 4 speed to a 5 speed!

I got the information from a diesel guy on on a w123 forum and I figured that most diesel owners have good access to parts and may have what I need.

That's a bummer, those LH starter trannies are maybe not a dime a dozen but probably worth 1/5th a RH starter tranny maybe! Good Luck!

gotcha.
yeah, finding the proverbial needle is on equal footing as the RH starter 5speed... I have one, and I'm not parting with it.
your best bet is putting the one you have up for sale, and start searching for the RHStarter model. they are available, but the search will be long and hard won.

generally see these come up once every couple years in the states, pretty often on the German ebay, but the shipping is a killer and you need a German account and a person to ship if the guy wont ship. also ebay.de wont allow you to bid if the sellers says Europe only. I used "w123 getriebe gang" to search there

Thanks, I am not in a huge hurry to find another one, or sell this one. I have much bigger fish to fry on both my 4 speed cars.

This was more of an opportunistic buy as I saw it come up. It would be nice to do a trade while I have the car complete as I know very little about this setup and I do not want to part it and then find out that I missed an important part that is needed for the conversion.

What I really need to do is put the car up in the air and take a look at the gearbox and compare it to what I have on the 4 speed car to determine if it really won't work. I'm not sure how many people have done this conversion on M110 cars so I really don't know how solid this information is.

The majority of people that responded to me thus far indicated that it would not work because of the location of the starter which is for sure, not the case.

The bell-housing of that M102 transmission is also the transmission case. No getting around that. Where is the starter on an RHD M110 motor? The engine has a removable back-plate.

Even with the starter on the same size, the bell-housings are shaped differently, but at least, you'd be closer and perhaps could construct an adapter plate.

Having said that, I have two of those elusive 5-speeds. One came from a 280TE and the other came from a 300D NA. One I'm keeping definitely. The other one? I'm not too attached to it. Once it gets separated from the 300d it's in, I will most likely sell it.
