sticking brake caliper
Hello,
?I need some advice on my brakes. My passengers front brake caliper is sticking. Is this problem most likely? a. caliper b. master cylinder c. hose failing I have read some of the previous thread in the forum and see that the hose one way valve phenomemon might be an answer. Car is 290,000 miles. New master cylinder 10 years/100k miles ago. James If anyone knows what might fix it I would appreciate it. The problem sort of comes and goes. Thanks, James Last edited by biodieselkid; 08-18-2010 at 09:55 PM. |

sounds like it could be hose. they are cheap, and available at NAPA, so just change them and see if they still stick. flush them well with fresh fluid, and go ahead and change all the hoses. and flush all the fluid, and clean out the MC while you are at it. that'll likely fix it... if not, it's not wasted energy, just change the caliper, and you'll have a fully new system.

If you mean one of your brakes is 'dragging' or not retracting after braking, then I second the hose theory.
However, when you say that a 'caliper is sticking' it implies the piston is stuck in the caliper bore due to corrosion, misalignment or dimensions issue. |

In my experience it is much more likely to be the caliper itself on a benz. How are your pads? If they are very worn, just putting new pads in will make the piston operate in a different portion of the caliper bore and might result in better performance.
They last about forever so a good used caliper is also an option if you have any lying about. I have only had a very few stick on me and those were mainly when the pads were very worn.

Open the bleeder valve and try to push the pistons in. If they move freely, it's the hose. If they don't, it's the caliper.

thank you
I did the bleeder valve trick and the caliper is still holding the wheel. Thanks for the tip on the hose versus caliper trick. That helped a ton. James
