Rear fog light!

Hi all.
Does anyone know if the rear fog lamp on a 1986 300 SDL was an option or was it standard issue?
Cheers and thank you

Big Dan

I know the lenses were there, and the sockets were there, but I don't know if the bulbs and wiring was there on the SDL. isit a euro?
I'd bet if it's a USA model vehicle, and it has rear fogs, it was added later. US should be without rear fog...

Why would it be standard issue in a land where no one knows what one stuck brake light means?

I think the rear fog feature was standard issue on US models from sometime in the 90s. I think my 91 300SE had it, or maybe just needed a bulb. I'm pretty sure my 95 S420 had a bulb.

The US market W126 was never sold with a rear fog lamp. The wiring and bulb monitor pins for the rear fog lamps were re-used as the power for the rear side parking lights on US cars. If you want to get the rear fog(s) going you'll have to run a new wire from the front of the car, and change the headlamp switch as the US market ones don't have the contact for the rear fog. That's what I did.

Some folks have also jumped a wire into the fog light section and used it as a second taillight lens instead of being completely unused. The w126 taillights are relatively dim/small compared to many newer cars.

This is true. Putting the correct German lamps in them does help though, the height of the filament is critical because of the reflector design.
