210 Ignition tumbler removal problem
I'm trying to replace the ignition tumbler on a 97 E300. Reason for replacement is that tumbler has become worn and difficult to turn. I've gotten as far as turning tumbler to position 1 and trying to rotate cap with tool 202 589 00 14 00. Unfortunately cap will not rotate the 90 degrees counter-clockwise necessary to release. Apparently, tumbler does not want to release the cap. Any suggestions on how to get this tumbler out?

Tool
Tool 639 589 01 07 (AFAIK same as tool 202 589 00 14 00) is used to remove the ignition switch bezel in the 1996-97 E300 series. I used it successfully for my '96. The '97 has a different ignition switch but I think the lock is the same. The plastic bezel should turn counter-clockwise and come out.
You do not have to have the key in the switch to remove the bezel; the key does not have to be turned to position 1 to remove the bezel. See this thread post #4 for a diagram from the FSM. Once the bezel is out, insert the key, turn to position 1, and you should be able to use the key as a "handle" to pull the lock out of the dash, leaving the switch in place. If you have a new lock ready to go in you don't even have to disconnect the battery. Jeremy

Jeremy,
I'm putting in the Ignition switch on my 1996 E300-210 got the parts, tool but I'm stuck on pushing in the pins on the switch housing. I can't get the leverage to push the pins in and can't remove. Is there a tool or special plyers to remove. The pins have an indentation inside and would seem they would take some type special tool. Can you advise, Ron Last edited by Ron Rountree; 08-02-2013 at 09:56 PM. Reason: Did not add model of the car |
