1983 300cd wierd heater issue

Ok, I have had this 300cd since April, my first diesel benz. I charged the AC, works fine after the compressor's been running for a while. Blower works fine. All the climate control buttons work seem to function.

It's that time of year where I'm starting to think heat might be nice.

So here's the wierdness. I turn the wheel to hot, select a setting. It blows hot, it just doesn't stay hot. If I push a different climate control button, super! blows hot and again doesn't stay hot. If the car's shut off, sits for a couple minutes get back in and start it, blows hot and....you guessed it, doesn't stay hot. WTF????

Anyone know what's up with this thing? Please help out a noob.

Can the monovalve stick closed?

It sounds like it is opening and then springing shut. Maybe a PO modified it somehow. I would check that first.

A torn monovalve diaphragm can cause erratic heat issues. The typical scenario is that the heater works at slower vehicle speeds, then starts blowing cold air at highway speeds.

once the passenger compartment reaches the set temp, it will cool off a bit. if you set the fan on auto, it will reduce blower speed too. if you dial the temp wheel hotter does it warm up? my dash has a small opening in the center, i assume yours does too. there is a thermistor in it. it may not be working properly.

In the defrost mode, you should get full heat. this is the default mode.

as said above, probably the mono valve cartridge.
