1983 300D Loss of Power at speed

I was driving my 300D into work today, and noticed that when I was going about 67 mph and started uphill, I was losing power significantly. I lost speed all the way down to 60 mph (not a big hill), and noticed it was smoking like it does when I accelerate hard in the mornings.

No abnormal sounds from the car, oil pressure is good (per the gauge).

It is due for a fuel filter change, but if it was starving for fuel would it still smoke like that?

Thanks,

Joe

sounds like fuel filters to me.
what color is the smoke? it could be air filter too. and air filter can cause black smoke.

It was still fairly dark outside, but it looked like the standard greyish smoke I always get in the mornings driving to work.

I've got some Startron at home, and new filters. I'll put them on and see where it goes from there first.

Your problem sounds a lot like what I'm dealing with right now. I'm not sure if it smokes. It will suddenly slow to 60 mph; and pressing the pedal to the floor doesn't make any difference. I replaced the fuel filter but it didn't help. Have you figured anything out?

Did you replace both filters?

Check the banjo bolt on the back of the intake manifold is clear of gunk, then tighten it back down.

How is the air filter? Lack of fuel will generally not generate more exhaust smoke, but lack of air will.

I once had that happen due to a failed ALDA, and I have had it happen due to clogged fuel filters. However, I'm surprised it was smoking if it was under-fueled.

Try changing both fuel filters and the air filter. Also clean the banjo bolt fitting as previously mentioned. If that fails, you might want to try adjusting the valves.
