vtbenz 83sd transmission problems
OK fellas, first i think this form is the kittys behind ! god this was so much harder in the past. Now here is the question ? My 83 300sd the transmission, yes it went south, at first i thought it was the B2, valve. i had only low gear and reverse, and then it was alright and then when i was motoring down the road at 50mph it would fall out of 4thgear into low! yipes !!. then one day it only had low and reverse. So i popped out the B2 it was ok, it and the guide bushing did show ware and binding so i replaced it. And everything is where it should be, I be some good mechanic.
Now that it is back together i have no forward gears, only reverse. if i bring the revs up to 4 or 5 k it barely moves , and it wines like slipping bands or what ?. So what does anybody think? If i can't fix it simply, I have a tranny from an 85 300sd lying around that worked when i removed it. it has 300k on it. God that thing ran well. i had the dreaded cancer, water in the trunk ok, water in my dash is no good. Will this 85 fit with no problems. thanks. Last edited by vtbenz; 09-20-2010 at 10:48 AM. |

The 85 is a different transmission. I can't see how it would not work though. It will definitely bolt up as the engine is the same. You may have some electronic issues but it should work. I have a tranny from an 82 in my 84. The only issue is the tach no longer works since 84 and 85 SDs get their tach pick up at the bell housing on the tranny and 83 and prior get it up by the front of the engine so you should not have a problem with the tach since you are putting a newer year into an older car but I'm not exactly sure if the speedometer cable is different.
In short and 85 tranny in an 82 car should work. At least I would rather put an 85 into an 82 than an 82 into an 85 if that makes any sense.

I'm trying to remember if you can see those parts just by pulling the pan, and not the valve body or piston?

Ok BoiseBenz,
i have checked quite a few posts on this issue and i knew of this problem. When i put the cover on i knew the link was engaging the band and valve. One other thing, Before i removed the B2 valve, when i was towing this beast home with my truck before you get to my house you have to go down the side of the mountain. So i unhooked the car and put it in low to get it going and then put it in drive, and when it got up to about 35 or 40 mph it kicked in do 4th and drove itself home. It was when i had to stop that it fell into low and would not come out. Is there a easy to measure the gap in the band tension or pressure without removing the trans. This is not my first MB foray i used to work on MB's and BMW's with friend of mine when i lived in Cleveland Oh. although we never did any tranny work. He was a master MB for 13 yrs.and a master BMW mechanic for the remainder. Age , finally get us all. We used to race SVRA back in the late 70's mid 80's with all kinds ancient iron we had a 53 Panard Dina jr. we used to race all kinds of stuff |

Just curious, when you were towing the car, did you tow it with the rear wheels on the ground? There's a pump in the transmission that circulates the fluid. If the rear wheels are spinning, the tranny's driveshaft is also spinning, but the pump isn't circulating fluid which causes it to overheat. But if you didn't go far or fast that wouldn't be a problem.
