Way to go! Did you just find this? It's ironic that the other thread on vacuum pump mods came up in the light of timing chains grenading due to VP failure. It has caused me to think about mine. How did you find it?

no, but I was not paying attention when I changed the oil. so the bits of plastic could be anywhere. I'm not TOOO concerned about plastic in the oil pan though. ALL 6 ball bearings are there, so I'm happy happy happy!

BTDT. That's how the pump of my 93 SD was when I got it.

Post details of that car so someone who knows logarithms can figure out the half life of an old style pump

Looks like you scored big on that. I will be looking for a 300D or another SD soon for my daughter. This will be one of the first things I check as well as other stuff.

I wouldn't worry too much about the plastic, it's good that the balls are all accounted for. How hard is it to drop the pan and take a look on that engine?

John,
you must have done something special for some one to have luck like that!!!
Metal cages in bearings last much longer.

I've not gotten under it too much yet, but it looks like there is a kickout on the side that comes off, other than that, I think I'd have to lift the motor to get the pan off...

Not withstanding my failure, this seems to be more of an issue on the 60x engines than the 61x engines. My 617 had over 300K miles on the original part when it failed.

Well, I will clean the old pump well and verify the cage was plastic, if it is steel, I still think it'll be ok in the pan. it's a small thin part.
has anyone gotten a 603 VP apart and seen what the bearing cage is made out of? I know the balls are most destructive, so I'm thrilled they are all in place.

That's what I thought. It's probably OK if you have accounted for all the metal parts.
