how to get more power out of the 617A engine?

Hi I am new to this board. Finally I found a MB diesel forum. Great!
I own a 300GD with a turbo diesel engine. Great car.
Anyway;

How can I get more power out my 617A engine??
I know about raising turbo boost and stuff butt I don't know how to replace the wastegate spring and also how to adjust the pump.

The reason why I wat to get more power of it is that the engine is placed in my G wagen.

My G wagen has 33" mud tires and the 4 speed gearbox. So a little more power would be nice

Thanx in advance for the info

Devon,
You lucky dog you! I would love to get my hands on a diesel G wagon. Read the post regarding Tough fuel problem. Your motor can safey handle up to 14psi boost. Tee into the line to the ALDA and rig a gauge temporarily. You must be under load (driving) and near 4000rpm to measure boost. If you search the archives here you'll find plenty of discussion about adjusting boost pressure and ALDA tweaking. You can adjust the spring in the waste gate or you can put a valve in the rubber line from the turbo to the waste gate so that the waste gate doesn't "see" all the boost. Bring your engine up to full factory specs and it will make plenty of power and still be very reliable.

Great! I do have a turbo gauge so I can read the boost. The ALDA? Is that the square thing with the boost line connected to it at the right side off the pump? (if you are looking at it with the fan at the left hand).

I'll will put the boost gauge there temporary.

In wich order do you adjust the ALDA? First the boost and then the ALDA. And do I have to turn the screw on the ALDA clockwise or counter clockwise to increase the feul consumption

I installed a turbo boost controller from Dawes Devices and turned my boost up to 14psi THEN adjusted the ALDA. The boost controller has been in there for a while but I'm still fine tuning the ALDA screw. It's at about 1.25 turns counterclockwise, that is 450 degrees. The combination of the greater boost and more fuel did wonders for acceleration from both a standstill and at speed. I also have a VDO boost gauge permanently installed that is fun to look at. Good luck.

I got the boost controller at:
www.dawesdevices.com

and the boost gauge (I have the 15psi one) from:
www.egauges.com

Hmmm counterclockwise....... That is the other direction then the clock ticks, wright? Because I allready gave it 1.5 turns to the left(against the way the clock ticks) but I couldn't turn it further. ?

I'm from the netherlands so that explains

Anyway I have MAX boost at full accelaration and that is 12.6 PSI, about 0.9 bar(atmosphere), so I was wondering if it would make a difference when I got the last 1.4 PSI out of it.

Then the boost starts so late. At about 2000-2200 RPM Isn't possible to get earlier boost or more power earlier?

I think that when the boost kicks in, is a function of what year car you have (different years, different emissions equipment). I'm not so sure you'd get all that much out of cranking up the boost the extra 1.4psi. I suppose you'd see the difference on the highway when you want to pass. With regards to the ALDA, yes, you turned in the correct direction. I'm surprised that it won't turn any further. On a side note, have you noticed any fuel economy difference? I'm kind of deadlocked at 24 or 25 MPG mixed driving and am wondering if it could be dramatically changed by altering the ALDA back to stock.

Hard to see if the fuel economy changes. Because I also use the car offroad and then it really likes the diesel

About the ALDA. I didn't try harder because I don't know if it brakes fast. Maybe it is possible to turn it further. It could also be changed with getting of the plastic cover because that was hold tightly. And when I got it off the screw allready came off. Is there any correct way to check the correct setting? Or are we just trying and geussing here?

The general concensus on adjusting the ALDA was to turn it out until you just get a faint visible amount of grey smoke at full acceleration at around 4000 or so RPM. It's not an exact science but it seems to work ok. Oh, and make sure you do it in full sunlight because at night, you can see a lot of particulate matter in other people's headlights.
