Well, I can see it if you have a 124 with a wrecked 603 (or whatever) and your choices are either junk it, or drop a 617 that you have lying around in it. But, I don't know anyone who has tried it or have a clue of how difficult it would be.

That is how it is, have several OM617 and broken motor in W124.
Also like the simplicity of the 617.
Any suggestions?

How tall is the 617 compared with a 603 ? I am far from convinced that it would fit from a height consideration. You would think that it would not be too hard to exchange a 617 for a 603, & put the proper motor in.

Well for one, hood line is too low; won't fit. Maybe sell a couple of 617's to fund the purchase of a 603?

There was a 124 with 617 listed on eBay a couple of years ago.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but doesnt the 603 use the hydraulic motor mounts (or whatever they are called) that are similar to the m103? Those mounts are different than the 617s..

Anyway, I'm always supportive of motor swaps. Dare to be different!

The 603 in the 126 uses rubber mounts with separate hydraulic dampers. But good point, the chassis determines the mount type so there's still a mismatch. It won't be plug-n-play since 617 mount arms for hydraulic mounts were never offered in US cars.

I have 123 and pulled the 617 out, there was a small hydraulic damper on the driver side. Is this the same principle as Om603 mount?

I found a couple of threads mentioning that they saw a w124 with a OM617. "icefire and T walgamuth at 2 -12-2007"

Tom , if you are around can you remember some details of the swap you saw?

yeah the height , hmmm,

dude,

they slanted those motors just to shoehorn them in there.

... and that was after they recessed the camshaft into the head casting

the 603 is just as easy to work on.

good luck with your swap.

Psh, because the 617 is obviously superior.

At this point my family has 4 617's, none have ever had a problem, and we've put a combined mileage of close to 200k on the 4 of them so far, with 100k of it being put on mine, still runs perfect, still starts at 0F, even with 300k+ on it. I have no doubts my engine will go to 400k easily.
