Recommended Diesel Winter Oil

Hello Everyone,

Can anyone recommend a 10w-30 oil for winter use on a 1985 300D Turbo? I have been using Shell Rotella 15w-40 year round but would like a thinner oil for better upper engine lubrication when cold. Temperatures can reach -10 F in this part of CT but usually hover in the teens for days. Mileage is 250,000 with little blow by. I am mainly asking this question because I can't seem to find a 10w-30 for diesels that is non synthetic. I don't mind paying for synthetic but I am hesitant because of possible leakage. Thanks!

Eh, I wouldn't run a 10W-30 in my car. I've used 15W-40 dino and 5W-40 synthetic (or pseudo synthetic by the standards of some). Both work fine and the latter will help with cold starts. You can usually get a gallon of Rotella T for about $20... not too bad. These cars seem to take a little under 2 gallons.

Yup, 5W40. I like Mobil 1, but there is nothing wrong with Rotella synthetic. You will be surprised how much quicker it spins in very cold weather.

The Mobil 1 looks good to me. No issues with seal leaks? I don't know how common this is. I have just heard of it.

I would run a 5w-40 year round. Right now Im running schaeffer's 9000 full syn 5w-40 with great results. Rotella t6 5w-40 is simple and a good option.

I have a zero tolerance policy for oil leaks, so mine have all been fixed anyway. If you have existing leaks, the thinner oil may cause the leakage to increase, you really have to try for yourself.

"thinner" oil has nothing to do with leaks.

If you have leaks, you may leak more with 5W40 than 15W40. Synthetics certainly do not cause leaks.

You have heard myths from the 1980's that weren't true even then.

if you're leaking now, you will continue to leak. (check the air cleaner o-rings)

Or until the synthetic oil conditions your seals and the leaks go away.
