Labor Involved in PROPERLY Cleaning and Lubing Sunroof
I keep the rails cleaned and lubed in the sunroof of my 1992 300D. However, it still sticks a little when opening and closing...I sometimes have to help it along. So I suspect the time is coming when I'm going to have to have it cleaned and lubed per FSM. How much labor is this likely to cost me? Not something I'd want to mess with myself.
Thanks.

What are you using as a lubricant? There is a specific MB product available for this application. I believe it is formulated to not attract or hold dust and dirt.

at the dealer, when doing the service, we would spray the tracks w/ wd40 and rub em w/ a shop rag till they were completely clean of all gunk, dirt, etc. then yes there is a special can of grease that we'd put a dab on each side in the opening at the rear of the tracks for the pop up function. (not sure how to describe it) when the roof closes it will spread the grease. you can get away w/ using spray lubricant in the tracks, but it needs to be the kind that leaves a film. wd and 5-56 evaporate and then you just got dry tracks.

Remove the sunroof cable, clean/lube, re-insert, adjust. Should take around 1/2 hour.

If you DIY, here's a list of felt sliders that might need to be replaced -

Grease
My local parts place has a jar of the MB grease to use for free, as a courtesy to their customers. Hopefully someone up by you does the same thing.
The reason they do it, is a jar of it is $30-$40 or something, and all you need, is a little dab of it. It's almost the consistency of Vicks Vapor Rub. Last edited by jbach36; 09-26-2010 at 05:12 PM. Reason: wrong term |

From my limited analysis, it is a silicone grease, I've been using Plumber's Grease (the clear 100% silicone stuff) from the local Ace Hardware, a couple of bucks for a little container that'll last you a couple of cars and is useful for other small tasks.
