A/C stops blowing cold at traffic lights

Hi Everyone,

This'll be an easy one for you all! The air conditioning in our '85 300CD blows nice and cold when trundling down the interstate, but when we're stopped at a traffic light, the air starts to get warm and humid. Needless to say this poses a problem when trying to use the air conditioning around town - especially this past summer and our current indian summer up here in New England! If I sit in the car, parked, in Park or Neutral, with the air con running, same problem. But if I toe the accelerator and bring'er up to about 1500rpm, the a/c starts blowing nice and cold again. Methinks it's some type of "high-idle" needed for good a/c when stopped that our car currently lacks. What say you? Thanks in advance!!

J

Check your Aux. fan. Is it running after idling for long periods? Check the fuse first and go from there.

You can jumper the wires over at the temp. switch (by the drier) to see if the fan itself is operable.

X2

Start with the Aux fan and go from there.

I would check the compressor's clutch out... I had the same problem on my 85 300D, and it turned out that the clutch would only engage at higher RPM's...all it needed was an adjustment. My mechanic had some special tool he used...sorry I don't know what it's called. He explained it to me as wear had caused the clearance on the magnetic clutch to widen.

heh, east coast is still warmed by the atlantic coastal currents... we gots a few more weeks of A/C needs!
anyhoo, 134 conversions don't have the liquid capacity to maintain cooling at idle speeds. also, if your condenser has dirt/bug buildup, you will get the conditions you show. have the condenser CHEMICALLY cleaned with condenser coil chemical, and you should see a marked improvement in the cooling ability.
