1984 Mercedes-Benz 300Sd Turbo Diesel
I bought a Mercedes-Benz 300SD Turbo Diesel like 4 month ago with 147000k and the engine does not shut off, also the lock doors does not work either when you insert the key to lock or unlock (this problem was like this since I bought the car), I have hear that it's a faulty vacum issue? also. in the trunk is suppose to have a vacum valve? all there is aroung the spare tire is 2 thick yellow & black wires that are loose -- do you have an idea of what this problem/s are and if I need to buy/replace a part/s and if so a good OEM parts website. Or a replacement part will be the same? Thanking you all in advance! carlos.

Engine shutoff and central locking are both vacuum systems but in your car they are independent vacuum systems. Engine shutoff uses vacuum from the brake booster while central locking has a dedicated electric pump in a foam case in the trunk beside the spare tire.
There is an engine shutoff device atop the injection pump, likely an original brass color cylinder or a white plastic dome with a rubber hose fitting. Apply vacuum directly to the device. If the stop lever on the side of the injection pump doesn't pivot downward, you probably need a new shutoff device. If the level pivots downward, you have to investigate why there is no supply vacuum. Likely a leaky hose or a faulty key switch vacuum section. A replacement shutoff device is available through the Buy Parts -> Fastlane link at the top of the page. Look for the foam lump to the right of the spare tire. There should be a pump inside with both wires and plastic hoses attached. The question is why the wires are disconnected. Either they came loose on their own or there is a problem with the pump, maybe running continuously and draining the battery or internally shorted and blowing the fuse. If you need a new pump, I mean no disrespect to the Fastlane what allows this website, but there are many good used pumps available. Try the Parts for Sale section of this website or visit a wrecking yard. Sixto 87 300D |

1984 MB 300SD TD
I got the car back from the old fellow and what he wanted to do was to weld some kind of thing in the engine and run a wire into the car so i could pull the stop knob in the engine he said that there were a lot of hands in the car before and on the steering culumn there were a couple of vacum hoses that he could not find where they were attached before. I mean he tried but it loooks like I need to take the car to someone that knows. This is going to be next so which me luck...

The two vac lines, brown and brown/violet, are the vacuum supply and line to the shut off actuator, respectively. If you have a functioning valve (item #32, part #000 460 02 84) on the ignition, hook those back up.
Item #34 is the brown line, goes to the main vacuum line in the engine compartment. Item #35 is the brown/violet line that goes the actuator.

Get under the dash and look at your steering lock mechanism. You should have two vacuum lines going to it. When you turn the key a vacuum switch connects and disconnects the two lines to stop and start the car. IIRC, its a replaceable component, and it sits on the lock assembly between the key and the electrical switch on the passenger side of the assembly. If the hoses are disconnected from the steering lock assembly, the car will not stop.

The system is not as complicated as it may seem. If you do have a vacuum leak, welding a new device on will resolve only one issue; shutting down. You will still wind up having to chase down other issues I you want the car to run properly, and once they are repaired, your original engine shutoff will probably work.
That said, you need to find a shop that works on these older benzes frequently...otherwise you will pay an otherwise great mechanic to "learn" @ $??/hr and still probably not get it repaired as it should be. Otherwisefolow the advice here, it is loaded with knowledge!
