240D engine swap no trans--engine wants to fall forward?

Hello diesos,

Hm, so I swapped a 240d motor from a 1980 manual into a 1982 automatic chassis without a transmission attached. I installed new motor mounts before and got the engine arms to sit in the mounts and the engine in I think the right position but it seems wrong. If there wasn't a block of wood holding it, the motor wants to fall top forward towards the front. Just wondering if this is normal and I can proceed trying to bolt the engine back in then the transmission?
Can't think of what I could've done wrong, the engine sits in the mounts nothing in the way. My manual says not to install an engine without a transmission but I thought hey I can do anything...

Thanks again,

Mike

The weight of the transmission balances the engine on the motor mounts.

the weight of the transmission is not the only thing that keeps the engine in position. also the tailshaft of the transmission is bolted to a motor mount and the three mounts together work to keep the assembly where it is supposed to be.

engine trans combo

Although you can do anything, and bolting a trans in is common.

I gave in and did the engine and trans as a single unit.

I do believe that a 240D motor would have a fall forward effect.
Probably ok as long as you support it.

I would pull the engine back out and attach the tranny.

That's right. I found this out when I had to swap transmissions. The front of the engine must be supported or it will fall forward. The transmission and it's mount are what keep the engine in place. Of course on the early 240D manual trans there is also an engine stop near the front or rear of the oil pan (I can't remember where).

The 4cyl must be supported or bolted to the trans, but you can get away with it with the 617. On mine, I put a block between the oil pan and steering linkage, but it never touched it. It was actually quite well balanced.

Ah good, I thought the engine didn't fit somehow . Maybe the most proper safest thing would be pull it back out and to attach the transmission. Er, but that engine stop is near the front and I should be able to bolt the engine to the mounts and perhaps support it more thoroughly than with a block of wood and perhaps put in the transmission and all after it's bolted and supported? Yeah, I'm an amateur, when we were pulling the engine out we noticed the front wheels were coming off the ground because I forgot to unbolt the engine stop. Doh! But that's a pretty strong attachment! As always thanks a lot for the help guys!
